Gail Jarvik leads Northwest Institute of Genetic Medicine

A $5.3 million grant from the Life Sciences Discovery Fund will be used to launch a new institute dedicated to translating human genetic research into clinical medicine. Gail Jarvik, head of the Division of Medical Genetics, will direct this collaboration of scientists at UW, Seattle Children's Hospital Research Institute, Group Health, and local biotechnology companies.

DOM faculty appointed to new endowed positions

Dr. Itamar B. Abrass, Head of the Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine; Dr. Virginia C. Broudy, Vice-Chair of the Department of Medicine and Chief of Medicine at Harborview Medical Center; Dr. Keith B. Elkon, Head of the Division of Rheumatology; and Dr. Robert H. Knopp, Head of the Section of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition at Harborview, are the first holders of an endowed chair and three endowed professorships.

Dr. Seymour J. Klebanoff, Professor Emeritus of Medicine, received the AAMC Award for Distinguished Research in the Biomedical Sciences.

U.S. News and World Report has again ranked UW first among U.S. medical schools in primary care education. Internal medicine was rated sixth in the nation.

Ken Steinberg is new residency director

Dr. Kenneth P. Steinberg, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, is the new director of the Medicine Residency Program, succeeding Dr. James F. Wallace, who directed the program for 30 years.
