The AABS offers a number of grant, scholarship and fellowship opportunities for scholars. These include:

Mudīite I. Zīlīte Saltups Postgraduate and Post-Doctoral Fellowships

The AABS invites applications for Short-Term Study or Research Grants for up to eight weeks of study of the Humanities and Social Sciences in the United States with a maximum stipend of $5,000. Applicants must be citizens of the Republic of Latvia, speak Latvian, have their permanent residence in Latvia, and come to the United States to study. Details...

Jānis Grundmanis Postgraduate Fellowship for Study in the U. S.

The Grundmanis Postgraduate Fellowship is an annual fellowship of $15,000 for graduate study in the United States. Applicants must be citizens of the Republic of Latvia, speak Latvian, and have their permanent residence in Latvia. Preference will be given to applicants studying in the field of humanities or social sciences. Details...

The Vilis Vītols annual award of $500 is presented to the author of the best article in a given year of the Journal of Baltic Studies. Details...

Dissertation Grants for Graduate Students

Application Deadline: December 15 2009
Amount: Up to $2000
The Association invites applications for grants to support doctoral dissertation research and write-up in any field of Baltic Studies. Funds may be used for travel to research site, equipment, duplication or other needs as specified. Proposals will be evaluated according to the scholarly potential of the applicant, and the quality and scholarly importance of the proposed work, especially to the development of Baltic Studies. Amount: Up to $4000
Applications are invited in any field of Baltic Studies. Proposals will be evaluated according to the scholarly potential of the applicant, and the quality and scholarly importance of the proposed work, especially to the development of Baltic Studies. Subvention Grants

Amount: Up to $2000
The Association accepts applications for subvention grants on an ongoing basis. These grants support the publication of scholarly books and book-length translations in any field of Baltic Studies. AABS primarily supports scholarship in the humanities and humanities-related social sciences. Applications will be evaluated according to the scholarly accomplishments of the applicant, the merit of the proposed book, and its importance to the development of Baltic Studies. Details...

Book Prize

Nomination Deadline: February 1, 2010
Amount: $500

Awarded to an outstanding English-language scholarly book in Baltic Studies (humanities and social sciences) published in 2008 or 2009. Books with a broadly historical, literary, social, or cultural significance are of particular interest. Narrowly specialized or overly technical books will not be considered. Details...

The 2006-2007 AABS Book Prizes has been awarded to:





Katrina Z.S. Schwartz, Nature and National Identity after Communism: Globalizing the Ethnoscape (U of Pittsburgh P, 2006).

2007-2008 Dissertation Grant

The 2007-2008 AABS Dissertation Grant has been awarded to Jennie Schulze, George Washington University. Schulze's project is entitled The Language of Belonging: Russian Minorities in the Baltic States .

2007-2008 Emerging Scholar Grants

2007-2008 AABS Emerging Scholar Grants have been awarded to:

Gediminas Lankauskas, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Regina. Lankauskas' project is entitled Modernity, Morality, and Pentecostal 'Civil Society' in Postsocialist Lithuania.



Kara Brown, Assistant Professor of Educational Studies at the University of South Carolina. Brown's project is entitled The Politics of Preschool: Bilingual Education Possibilities and Problems in Estonian Kindergartens.



Indrė Čuplinskas, Assistant Professor of Catholic Studies at the University of Alberta. Čuplinskas' project is entitled Controlling the Future of the Nation: the Lithuanian Government's 1930 Crackdown on the Ateitis Catholic Student Federation.



Felder Wins Prize in Contemporary History

Congratulations to Bjorn Felder, winner of the 2006 AABS Dissertation Grant. Dr. Felder's dissertation was awarded the Fraenkel Prize in Contemporary History 2007 by the Wiener Library Institute of Contemporary History in London. A book based on his dissertation will be published the spring of 2008.

2006-2007 Dissertation Grant awarded to Jolanta Mickutė

The 2006-2007 AABS Dissertation Grant has been awarded to Jolanta Mickutė, a PhD student in Modern Jewish History at Indiana University to support her work on marginalized historical narratives of Lithuanian and Polish Jewish women.

2006-2007 Emerging Scholar Grant awarded to Brent McKenzie

The 2006-2007 AABS Emerging Scholar Grant has been awarded to Brent McKenzie, Assistant Professor of Marketing at the University of Guelph.

McKenzie's project is entitled From Soviet to Selver: Tallinna Kaubamaja -- 'Estonia's Department Store.' The Shaping of the Retail Sector in Estonia.



2006 Grundmanis Scholarship Awarded

Oskars Stucis (Notre Dame University) has been awarded the 2006 Jānis Grundmanis Postgraduate Fellowship for study in the United States.
