The 20th Conference on Baltic Studies was held June 15-17, 2006 at George Washington University in Washington, DC.

Participants were encouraged to consider, among others, the following questions: What is the “Baltic region?” Has the meaning of this concept changed over time? What are the cultural, social, economic, environmental, military, legal, and political implications of expanding the borders of the “Baltic region” both westward and eastward? How are the changes reflected in ideas and practices regarding ethnicity, nationhood, and citizenship? Wealth, poverty, and free markets? Gender norms and roles? Memories and the writing of history?
