Tolerance in Zhou Zuoren’s Literary Theory  and Criticism

 In 1922, Zhou Zuoren began to publish a series of articles including “The Tolerance in literature”, “The Unity of Literature” to promote tolerance as a theme and criticism in modern Chinese literature. His view is that tolerance would bring freedom to allow the development of different literary trends in China. Zhou Zuoren’s  tolerance in literature is based on his diversified views of literature. He promoted many different theories of literature, including Humanism of Literature, Literature of Individuality, Literature of Temperament and Soul , and Literature for Expression of Intention. Zhou Zuoren has made great contribution in applying different theories of  tolerance  to study  modern Chinese literature. He recognized  the important achievements of  writers of different styles and schools such as Yu Dafu, Wang Jingzhi, Fei Ming and Li Jinfa. He was helpful in establishing the  literary tolerance and freedom in modern Chinese literature.

 

 

周作人的宽容文艺思想及其批评

周作人从1922年开始发表《文艺上的宽容》、《文艺上的统一》等文章，主张新文学及其批

评者应持宽容的态度，不要防碍其它新兴文学潮流的成长，以使新文学获得自由的发展。

周作人宽容的文艺思想，是由许多因素造成的。从主观方面讲，它是周做人的“人道主义

”、“个性主义”思想和“性灵”、“言志”文学观念的表现；从客观原因看，它是对新文

学日趋偏激的警醒和纠正。

周作人以宽容的态度，积极从事新文学的批评，为新文学的发展和壮大做出了重要贡献。他

对郁达夫、汪静之、废名、李金发等创作的批评，扶植和造就了新文学的不同风格，实现了

他宽容、自由的文学理想。
