ACTU 080 FACT SHEET
Bronchoalveolar Lavage-Collected Alveolar Macrophages As A Reservoir For HIV
Purpose of This Trial:
This study is trying to find out if a certain type of cell found in the lungs, called a macrophage, is a location where HIV is can be found. The macrophage cells will be collected by a procedure called bronchoscopy to collect the lung cells. We want to see if HIV infection changes the number of these cells. We also want to compare the HIV in macrophages to the HIV in blood. The study will also collect these cells from some people who do not have HIV infection.
Requirements to Enter Study:
  • Age 18-50 years old.
  • Ability and willingness to give informed consent.
  • Ability to understand English.
  • No known active lung disease.
  • Contraindications to the bronchoscopy procedure.
  • No chronic or active heart or lung disease, diabetes requiring oral or injection therapy, or any other diseases which in the opinion of the investigator would potentially increase the risks of complications associated with bronchoscopy.
  • No lung disease (such as asthma requiring treatment, chronic bronchitis, emphysema)
  • No recent use of any inhaled nasal or lung medication (within past 90 days).
  • For HIV-negative subjects- not currently taking any prescription medications on a daily basis other than medications applied to the skin, such as antifungals or cortisone creams.
  • For HIV-positive subjects- not currently enfuvirtide (due to increase risk of bacterial pneumonia)
  • No upper respiratory infection or bronchitis with past 3 weeks
  • Not pregnant
  • No history of lidocaine allergy
Length of Study:
Two visits. (There is no benefit to you from your participation in this study.)
Schedule of Study Appointments(about 1 hour each):
There will be 2 clinic visits for screening and a second visit for the bronchoscopy. The screening visit includes a physical exam and blood draw. HIV-negative subjects will be asked to sign consent for an HIV test.
Reimbursement:
$125 upon completion of the bronchoscopy.
Contact:
Call 731-3184 and ask for the screening nurse
