Research
Scientist (Job location: Northgate area)
The Social Development Research Group
(SDRG) has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist for a
one-year position investigating the longitudinal effects of family violence
on children and resilience into adulthood.
This NICHD-funded project continues the Lehigh Longitudinal Study,
a prospective study that includes three earlier waves of data in which
parents and children were assessed over a 15-year period: in 1976-1977
when children were of preschool age; in 1980-1982 when children were
of school age; and in 1990-1992 when children were adolescents. Existing
data are from multiple sources, including child welfare case records;
surveys of parents and children; early observations of parent-child
interactions; birth records, diagnostic tests, and school records. The
457 child participants (and their families) were originally sampled
from child welfare abuse and protective service programs, Head Start
centers, and child care programs, all within a two-county area of Pennsylvania.
In this next phase of the study, participants (now adults in their early-to
mid-30s) are being re-contacted and interviewed on a range of topics,
including physical health and wellness; psychological health and well-being;
employment, educational attainment; relationships and relationship patterns;
and parenting. The study is a collaboration between researchers at the
University of Washington and Lehigh University.
