Dr. John Baer is the Director of Training with the Washington Node of NIDA's Clinical Trials Network, housed at ADAI. He has been active in basic research on the etiology of alcohol problems, and has collaborated with Dr. Marlatt in the study of early interventions for heavy drinking. Dr. Baer is also currently the Director of Interdisciplinary Fellowship Training in the treatment of addictive disorders at the VA National Center of Excellence in Substance Abuse Treatment and Education at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. In the Department of Psychology he developed and provided graduate level coursework and clinical supervision in assessment and treatment of alcohol problems for over five years. In addition, Dr. Baer performs several two-day workshops each year teaching clinicians techniques of assessment, early intervention, and motivational interviewing. He has been certified as a motivational interviewing trainer, having completed "Training for Trainers" with Dr. William Miller.

Current Projects:

  • Brief Substance Abuse Treatment for Homeless Adolescents.
    This four-year research program will develop and test a brief motivational enhancement and service-linking intervention tailored to the special needs of homeless youth and aimed at encouraging them to question social influences and assumptions about substance use, to consider treatment for drug problems, and to make use of available social services. more...

  • Development and Evaluation of Context Tailored Training. This research is designed to provide standardization and preliminary data-based support for the "context-tailored" training model, which theorizes that changes in practice behavior are more likely to occur in response to training that is tailored to the invididual's professional needs and accompanied by contextual processes that reinforce and support changes in clinical practice. more...
