Primary Research Interests:

Epidemiology

  • Epidemiological measures of illicit drug use in rural and urban settings
  • Drug-caused death analyses
  • Youth abuse of prescription drugs
  • Development of novel drug epidemiology surveillance tools

Services Research

  • Drug treatment outcomes -- impact of access to treatment and drug use characteristics
  • Health services research -- prescription opiate use patterns among chronic pain patients

Current Projects:

  • Substance Abuse Trends in Washington State. This project involves the coordination of statewide epidemiology / surveillance activities related to alcohol and other drug abuse trends in Washington state. more...
  • Quantitative Drug Surveillance System Development. This proposal aims to develop the methodology and establish the feasibility of a drug-surveillance system based on quantifying illict drugs, other drug-use indicators including metabolites and synthesis precursors, and human biomarkers in raw influent entering municipal wastewater treatment plants that process human waste. more...
  • Long-Term Opioid Management of Chronic Pain: Trends and Risks. Health services research and epidemiologic methods will be used to understand who receives long-term opioid therapy and to assess associated risks including onset of opioid abuse and mortality. more...
