Dr. Calsyn is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Before coming to ADAI, he was also the Director of Outpatient Services at the Addictions Treatment Center of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. Dr. Calsyn has been involved with clinical research focusing on methadone clients, their characteristics, and different approaches to their treatment, including contingency management. Much of his work has focused on HIV/AIDS risk behaviors among IV drug abusers and preventive interventions. Dr. Calsyn was the Principal Investigator on two NIDA-funded clinical trials: "AIDS Prevention in IV Drug Users," conducted at the VA and at Evergreen Treatment Services and "Comparison of Three Levels of Methadone Intervention," conducted entirely at Evergreen Treatment Services. Both of these projects involved random assignment to various intervention conditions and long term follow-up (18 and 24 months). Dr. Calsyn is also Co-Investigator for HIV-Related Studies on the NIDA Clinical Trials Network project, housed at the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute. He is the Lead Investigator of NIDA-CTN-0018 protocol, "Reducing HIV/STD Risk Behaviors: A Research Study for Men in Drug Abuse Treatment."

  • Use of contingency management techniques in the treatment of drug abuse
