Dr. Leonardo Estacio is a NIDA INVEST/CTN Fellow at the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute for September 2009-2010. The INVEST/CTN Drug Abuse Research Fellowship teams non-U.S. drug abuse scientists with mentors from the National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network (CTN) to combine postdoctoral research training with professional development activities and grant-writing guidance. Dr. Estacio has a a Ph.D. in Medical Anthropology, a master's in Community Development, and a master's in Public Health, with an emphasis on drug abuse research and mental health. He studied at Johns Hopkins University where he was a Hubert H. Humphrey's Fellow. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at the University of the Philippines, Manila.

Primary Research Interests:

  • Community-based approaches for drug abuse prevention
  • Amphetamine-type stimulant abuse among adolescents
  • Quantitative approaches to epidemiological studies and data analytics
  • Neuroscience of addictive behaviors

Current and Completed Projects:

  • INVEST/CTN Drug Abuse Research Fellowship. As part of the fellowship, Dr. Estacio will be preparing a grant proposal about amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) abuse research among adolescents in the Philippines and other countries in Southeast Asia.

  • SMART Youth Center Project. Drug treatment and prevention for out-of-school youth in Manila, Philippines. Recipient of the 2008 International Prevention Award (Bright Idea Category) from Mentor International.

  • Assessment Report of the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC) Project on Primary Prevention of ATS Abuse Among the Filipino Youth. Principal Investigator, August 2007.

  • The Use of Children in Illicit Drug Trafficking in the Philippines: A Participatory Action Research for Child/Family and Community Empowerment. International Labor Organziation (ILO) Project in Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia: December 2004.
