Dr. Jeanette Norris is a Senior Research Scientist at the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute. She has a B.A. in Psychology from Marymount Manhattan College in New York, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Washington. Dr. Norris has been involved in substance abuse research at ADAI since 1985.

Primary Research Interests:

  • The relationship between alcohol consumption and sexual victimization, especially acquaintance rape
  • Alcohol consumption and social influence processes as determinants of responses to sexually explicit material, including those containing violence

Current Projects:

  • Alcohol and Acquaintance Assault Risk Perception. This project is conducting a series of experimental studies to examine the effects of alcohol consumption on cognitive mediation processes involved in women's perceptions of acquaintance sexual assault risk, evaluation of their concerns, and their responses to sexual aggression. more...

  • Alcohol and HIV/AIDS Risk-Taking. (PI: William H. George, PhD; Psychology) Dr. Norris serves as co-investigator for this project, the goal of which is to illuminate the role played by intoxication in decision-making related to infectious diseases. more...

  • Alcohol and Women's Cognitive Mediation of HIV Risk Taking. This project will experimentally investigate alcohol's physiological and expectancy set effects in young women of drinking age, as well as the role of alcohol expectancies in 18-20 year old women, regarding their appraisals of HIV risk, condom negotiation, and sexual decision making. more...
