Jefferson County, a land of forested mountains
and seashores, is located in the central portion of the Olympic Peninsula
in northwestern Washington. American settlers petitioned successfully
for a county government and the Oregon Territorial Legislature proclaimed
Jefferson a county December 22, 1852, shortly before Washington Territory
was established by Congress in 1853.
