Skamania County, Washington
Skamania County, located in the southwestern portion of the state, lies entirely within the Cascade Mountains and is bordered on the south by the Columbia River Gorge. Skamania an Indian word meaning "swift river" and refers to the swift currents of the Columbia River. The county was created on March 5, 1854 by the Washington Territorial Legislature.
