Application

We offer a combined Adolescent Medicine and STD/HIV Fellowship for pediatricians or internists with a primary and specific interest in AIDS and/or STD research and a desire to pursue a long term career in research on HIV and STDs in adolescents.

Overview

Our ACGME accredited three-year fellowship is designed to prepare physicians for a career in academic adolescent medicine with an emphasis on research, teaching, clinical care, and public health. The first year of training focuses on clinical care while the second and third years are focused on acquiring research training and experience. Details regarding each of these training years are provided below.

Clinical Training

In the first year, fellows work in a variety of sites with a wide diversity of patients. Core training sites include:

Fellows also are provided with the opportunity to participate in two elective sites per quarter during their clinical year. Elective opportunities include: Adolescent Gynecology Clinic, a sports medicine clinic, a teen pregnancy clinic, Group Health Cooperative Adolescent Clinic, child psychiatry, endocrinology, advocacy training, and behavioral management of headache and chronic pain. During the research years, fellows continue to see patients one afternoon per week in the General Adolescent Clinic and work in the STD clinic 1-2 half-days per month. During all three years of training, the adolescent fellow shares on-call responsibility with program faculty and acts as a consultant to pediatricians and child psychiatrists.

Research Training

The second and third fellowship years focus on research and STD/HIV training with the multidisciplinary faculty of University of Washington Center for AIDS and STDs. In addition to individualized research experience, training includes a core curriculum consisting of an introductory conference on Principles of STD and AIDS research, didactic lectures, seminars and conferences, and a retreat. The STD Research training course is a two week intensive course on all aspects of STD research from national leaders in the field. This course is also taken by many international doctors and public health workers who will take this information back to their own countries to help design their national health care system.

When appropriate for their research interests, fellows are encouraged to pursue a Masters of Public Health at the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

All fellows are encouraged to complete at least two independent research projects during their fellowship. Research tracks available include: (1) The Viral STD/HIV Research Track, (2) The Bacterial STD Research Track, (3) The Public Health and Epidemiology Track, (4) The International Research Track, and (5) The Sociobehavioral STD/AIDS Research Track. Details regarding each of these tracks are provided at: University of Washington Center for AIDS and STD (see fellowship opportunities).

Each fellow’s research training is overseen by a scholorship oversight committee. Members of this committee help the fellows develop research ideas, identify mentors and research resources, select coursework, and assure that the fellows are on track for completing their research projects. Time is provided during the clinical year to identify mentors and projects so that research can begin early in the second year. During all three years, fellows are encouraged to attend research conferences at the Child Health Institute.

Training for Teaching

Fellows are encouraged to attend courses in education offered through the University of Washington Department of Pediatrics Fellows’ College. The University of Washington has a vibrant medical school and pediatric residency program. Fellows have frequent opportunity to work with residents in clinical sites. To develop a teaching portfolio, fellows are also encouraged during their clinical year to participate in teaching conferences for medical students, residents, and community providers.

Accreditation

The UW Adolescent Medicine Fellowship Training Program is accredited by the American Board of Graduate Medical Education. Our current combined Adolescent Medicine and HIV/STD fellows are approved for American Academy of Pediatrics Adolescent Medicine Board eligibility.
