CALL: The City of Redmond is invested in training the next generation of public artists, who can create culturally relevant artworks that represent the diverse population of Redmond. The City is offering basic training to visual artists through a free three-day workshop. Topics include contracting, fabrication, maintenance, design concepts, and social practice. This opportunity is open to all visual artists, with or without public art experience, who seek to develop their work for the public realm. Participants will have an opportunity to apply for up to four temporary public art projects for the City of Redmond averaging $2,500 each.<\/p>\n

ELIGIBILITY: Public Art Camp Eastside is open to artists 18 years and older, living in and around Redmond and surrounding areas that include Bellevue, Duvall, Issaquah, Kirkland, Mercer Island, Newcastle, North Bend, Renton, Sammamish, Snoqualmie, and Woodinville. The City of Redmond is looking for a diverse pool of participants and wants to ensure that underrepresented groups will have access to this opportunity. Artists must be available to attend all three workshop dates.<\/p>\n

Any artist who has not received a temporary or permanently sited public commission over $5,000 (an artwork that is created by an artist at the request of an entity: public agency, corporation, or individual), can apply for the free training. This is a competitive process, so artists must apply to be considered. Up to 20 artists will be selected to participate in the Public Art Intensive Eastside.<\/p>\n

Applicants should be interested in exploring the presentation of their work in public settings and have an interest in community-building or enhancing the built environment.<\/p>\n

SELECTION CRITERIA: The City of Redmond is committed to a culturally inclusive community as stated in Resolution No 1465. Artists will be selected based on the following:
\n\u2022 Letter of interest
\n\u2022 Artist Bio
\n\u2022 Strength and artistic vision of past artworks (provide 5-6 samples)
\n\u2022 Experience with previous art exhibitions and projects<\/p>\n

PROJECT MANAGER: Elisheba Johnson
\nElisheba Johnson is a curator, public artist and administrator heavily influenced by the Fluxes movement and accessibility of art experiences and objects. Ms. Johnson worked for the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture on capacity building initiatives and racial equity in public art. In her six years at the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture, she co-led the Public Art Bootcamp with Marcia Iwasaki. She is currently a member of the Americans for the Arts Emerging Leaders Network advisory council and has won four Americans for the Arts Public Art Year in Review Awards for
\nher work. She currently co-manages Wa Na Wari, a Black art center in Seattle\u2019s Central Area that uses the arts to build community and resist displacement.<\/p>\n

\n\u2022 Artist Bio \u2013 (one- page limit) talk about your most influential shows in your bio
\n\u2022 Letter of interest \u2013 (up to 500 word count) the letter could explain why you are interested in the field of public art. Share how your background and life experiences inform your artwork. Let us know why you want to move in the public realm and how this will benefit your career. Please be explicit in how you meet eligibility in terms of age, region, and under-represented communities. City of Redmond is committed to an inclusive community and seeks artists comprised of a diverse working group in terms of cultural experiences, backgrounds, ethnicities, sexual identity, gender identity and abilities, etc.
\n\u2022 5-6 images of past work (some images may be details but no complications of multiple pictures on one image, please.) Option to include Up to 2 videos and can be submitted based on an url that can be accessed publicly, up to 1 minute of footage. If submitting from a private account, please add your login information for us to access your footage.
\n\u2022 Image Identification List (not to exceed 500 characters for each image). If you
\ncompleted a project as a team member, the image identification should indicate your role for each image submitted. Do not omit the Image Identification list or your
\napplication will be incomplete.<\/p>\n
