{"id":7436,"date":"2025-05-06T11:03:42","date_gmt":"2025-05-06T18:03:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/advis104\/?p=7436"},"modified":"2025-10-27T11:11:25","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T18:11:25","slug":"call-for-art-seeing-our-planet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/advis104\/2025\/05\/06\/call-for-art-seeing-our-planet\/","title":{"rendered":"EXPIRED: Call for Art \u2013 Seeing Our Planet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>[Deadline to enter June 8, 2025] <\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The Gallery at Graphite Arts Center (Edmonds, WA) is seeking artwork for the upcoming exhibition \u2018Seeing Our Planet\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>About the exhibit <\/b><\/p>\n<p>With the capacity to spark wonder, shock, question and inspire action, the visual arts can be a powerful force for bringing attention to our lived experience.\u00a0 Graphite Arts Center seeks artwork for the <b>Seeing Our Planet<\/b> exhibit which are direct, creative responses to the current state of our great and precious planet in this time of changing climate conditions.\u00a0 Whether a reaction, or an interpretation, <b>Seeing Our Planet<\/b> is a showcase of artwork interpreting our planet through the lens of climate change, crisis and sustainability.<br \/>\nAs part of the <b>Seeing our Planet<\/b> exhibit, Graphite will be featuring the photo series<b> Portraits of a Planet in Crisis<\/b> by invited, emerging artist, Amelia Digiano. Digiano\u2019s works \u201cexplore the dichotomy of eco-anxiety and environmental complacency through human stories that transpire within stories of environmental degradation.\u201d<br \/>\nThis is a juried, group show with rules for submission and standards\/guidelines for acceptance.\u00a0 Not all entries will necessarily be accepted.\u00a0 Submissions will be juried based on quality and adherence to instructions of the call.<\/p>\n<p><b>About The Gallery at Graphite<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Gallery at Graphite is a program of the non-profit <b>Art Start Northwest <\/b>and is located within Graphite Arts Center which opened in 2022 in downtown Edmonds, WA.\u00a0 Since opening, The Gallery at Graphite has hosted 19 art exhibitions in its 760 sq ft modern gallery space.\u00a0 The focus of The Gallery is to curate exhibits which showcase a variety of talent, genres and artistic expressions. Our aim is to provide high quality art experiences to our community.\u00a0 Graphite Arts Center includes: The Gallery at Graphite, artist studios, artist work spaces, an art book library, classroom space, and more. Graphite is open to the public Fridays and Saturdays 12-5PM. Graphite Arts Center is also open the third Thursday of the month for Art Walk Edmonds, 5-8PM.\u00a0 <b>The mission of Graphite Arts Center is to be a creative art space where people feel welcomed and inspired.\u00a0 Our vision is to make art accessible.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Important Seeing Our Planet Exhibit Dates:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b>June 27-August 9, 2025 \u2014 Exhibit dates<\/p>\n<p><em>Sunday, June 8\u00a0 \u2014 Deadline to enter<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tuesday, June 9 \u2014 Notification of acceptance (email)<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday, June 25, 11-3PM \u2014 Drop-off day for accepted works (in person, at Graphite)<\/p>\n<p>Friday, June 27, 12-5PM \u2014 Exhibit opens to the public<\/p>\n<p>Friday, July 11, 7-8.30PM \u2014 Opening Reception<\/p>\n<p>Saturday, August 9, 12-5PM \u2014 Exhibition closes<\/p>\n<p>Monday, August 11 Notification of works sold (email)<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday, August 12, 11-3PM \u2014 Pick-up day for unsold work (in person, at Graphite)<\/p>\n<p>Friday August 22, 2025 \u2014 Checks for any works sold mailed by this date<\/p>\n<p><b>SUBMISSION GUIDELINES<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b><\/b><b>Artwork<br \/>\n<\/b>Art must align with the exhibit description and speak to the idea of seeing our planet as it responds and reacts to a changing climate<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Works should be well executed, finished, and have a professional presentation<\/li>\n<li>Original 2D and 3D work in any medium may be submitted<\/li>\n<li>2D work should have minimum outside framed dimension of 16 inches in either direction<\/li>\n<li>2D work should not exceed an outside framed dimension of 48 inches in either direction <i>(Larger works may be considered and will incur an additional $15 entry fee, please email the gallery director in advance to discuss.)<\/i><\/li>\n<li>3D work should be intended for pedestal display and not exceed 50 pounds<\/li>\n<li>Preferred artwork is fresh, new work and original in concept, design and execution<\/li>\n<li>Artwork must be entered by the artist<\/li>\n<li>Do not submit artwork that is committed to another exhibition or otherwise is not available for the entire duration of the exhibition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Images<br \/>\n<\/b>All works must be well-photographed (clear, quality images cropped just to the art) for entry<br \/>\nSecond images showing framing are welcome but not required<br \/>\nImages of 2D works, if framed, should not have glare<br \/>\n3D artwork should be photographed with a clean background<br \/>\nImages should be sent oriented properly for viewing<br \/>\nJPEG files only max size 1MB<br \/>\n**Images and entry forms received by June 3 will be considered for use on promotional materials<\/p>\n<p><b>Image File Labeling<br \/>\n<\/b>Image files must be labeled: LAST NAME_TITLE\u00a0 (Please! Proper file labeling is important!!)<br \/>\ni.e. <b>Johnson_Earthview.jpg; \u00a0 Johnson_Earthview_detail.jpg;\u00a0 Johnson_Earthview_framed.jpg<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Entry Fee<br \/>\n<\/b>$20 fee for up to 3 different works of art<br \/>\nEntry fee is required and non-refundable<br \/>\nFee must be paid at the time of application<\/p>\n<p><b>Sales and Commission<br \/>\n<\/b>All artwork must be for sale<br \/>\nAll sales subject to 30% commission fee<br \/>\nArtist checks for any works sold will be mailed by August 22, 2025<\/p>\n<p><b>Awards<br \/>\n<\/b>(Awards have not been determined at the time of this writing.\u00a0 Please check back.)<\/p>\n<p><b>Delivery and Return of Work<br \/>\n<\/b>All accepted artwork must be delivered, ready to install, on Wednesday, June 25, 11-3PM.<br \/>\nPlease do not enter if you (or a representative) cannot deliver your work to Graphite on this date at this time.<br \/>\nAll unsold works must be retrieved after the exhibition closes on Tuesday, August 12, 11-3PM.<\/p>\n<p><b>Framing &amp; Presentation<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>Proper framing is a MUST \u2013 PLEASE READ THIS SECTION<br \/>\n<\/b>Please consider the appearance of your art (i.e. framing, matting, mounting, cleaning, etc.) prior to dropping off at Graphite.\u00a0 Graphite aims to present high-quality exhibitions with professional-level presentation.\u00a0 Please visit our gallery in advance if you are unsure what our space looks like and how our shows present.\u00a0 Not every work requires framing, but most do, especially for best presentation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plain black frames are recommended\/preferred.<\/li>\n<li>Blonde\/natural wood \u201cfloating canvas\u201d type frames are also recommended\/preferred.<\/li>\n<li>Works on canvas or other materials may not require framing if the edges are clean, painted and finished (corners should be tight and flat).<\/li>\n<li>The width of the frame should be appropriate for the size of the work.\u00a0 No super skinny frames on large works.<\/li>\n<li>Please! No fancy, decorative or colorful frames.\u00a0 No metal frames.\u00a0 No white frames.\u00a0 No glass clip frames.\u00a0 No photos printed on metal.\u00a0 Brown wood frames are discouraged.<\/li>\n<li>Artwork on paper (including photos) must be glazed<\/li>\n<li>Plain, white or off-white mats are recommended\/preferred for matted works<\/li>\n<li>Frames should be clean with no nicks or scratches. Glass should be clean.<\/li>\n<li>All works must be ready to hang with proper wiring for the weight of the work with flat D-ring hooks (or similar).\u00a0 No screw eye hooks that stick out, these will scratch our walls.\u00a0 Wires should be sufficiently tight that they will not be seen when hanging.<\/li>\n<li>Please! Only wires.\u00a0 No saw tooth hangers.\u00a0 No hooks as hangers.
