ACLU Complaint Counselor Internships

Presently Accepting Applications

Complaint Counselor internships are available in the legal department of the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington Foundation. A two-quarter (six-month) commitment is required, with a minimum of 12 hours each week.

Interns review and investigate complaints alleging violations of civil liberties and assist callers on the ACLU Complaint and Referral Line. They work closely with ACLU legal staff and handle complaints covering a broad spectrum of issues, including free speech, student discipline, police practices, criminal law, and jail and prison conditions.

Complaint Counselor Interns will learn interview and investigation skills, explore a variety of civil liberties and constitutional law issues, and become familiar with the work of a wide range of government agencies and community organizations. The Complaint Counselor internship provides excellent experience for students contemplating careers in public service, law, or public policy.

Applicants should have an interest in civil liberties, good interpersonal and analytical skills, and excellent writing skills. To apply, please submit a cover letter, résumé, list of three references and writing sample of approximately five pages in length by February 1, 2007 to: 705 Second Avenue, Suite 300, Seattle, WA 98104 or legal@aclu-wa.org.
