Summer fun: Salmon BBQs in New York and D.C.

I recently spent a weekend on the East Coast attending a couple of Husky barbecues in New York and Washington, D.C. Both events were first-class, and I want to say thank you to our gracious hosts.

Lex and Diane Gamble have opened up their beautiful home in Chappaqua, N.Y., for an impressive 37 years. It was 1973 when they first decided to host a gathering for UW alumni on the East Coast. Gas was 40 cents a gallon back then, the Vietnam War was ending, and Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon was atop the music charts. Fifty people came to that first barbecue, and now it’s a summer tradition for Huskies living in the New York area.

1,500 Huskies cheer Mariners to 1-0 win over Reds

Mariners ace Cliff Lee might be on the trading block, but Husky Summer Celebration Night with the Mariners isn’t going anywhere. More than 1,500 Huskies clad in purple and gold gathered at Safeco Field for our annual summer shindig. Harry the Husky was on hand to take pictures with UW Alumni Association members, and UW alumnus Joel McHale tossed out the first pitch.

You might know Joel from E’s The Soup and NBC’s hit comedy Community. He’s a 2000 UW graduate who walked on to the Husky football team and starred on the Seattle sketch comedy smash Almost Live!

We’re giving away free UW license plates to new grads

When I was a UW senior, I was ready to go. But that doesn’t mean I wanted to cut my ties to the University. On the contrary, I was looking for ways to stay connected. That’s why I joined the UW Alumni Association straight out of school. I spent three years down South, and I couldn’t even watch the Huskies being in SEC country and all. But my UWAA connection helped me stay close to campus.

Well, the UWAA is taking it to a new level this year. Special for the Class of 2010 is an offer for free UW license plates. That’s nearly a $50 value and will put more of those stylin’ UW plates on the road. Pictured here with his UW plates is Eddie Pasatiempo, UWAA President and proud graduate from the Class of 1977.

Travel: Historic Reflections – Memories of a lifetime

I love hearing from our travelers about their trip experiences and the moments that made a trip truly special for them. Here’s what John and Sonja Cowan told us when asked what would be their best, long-lasting memory from their recent Mediterranean cruise:

Hard to pick, visits with new people, tours of Ephesus, Turkey, Rome? Or maybe Siena where we magically found the ceramic shop we had been to some 10 plus years ago and bought additional dishes—from the very same shop owner who waited on us way back when…what a day that was!

Now how fabulous is that? These are the very moments that make traveling so heart-warming and leave us just itching to pack our bags for another trip. And thank you to Ellen Kaufmann, who shared a couple of wonderful trip photos with us. This hilltop town in Italy looks like an amazing discovery!

Lawrie, Taylor win Player of the Year awards

It was quite the week for UW athletes, as Danielle Lawrie picked up her second straight softball player of the year award and Nick Taylor earned men’s golf player of the year honors.

Lawrie, a member of the 2008 Canadian Olympic team, became just the second player ever to win the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award in back-to-back seasons. Taylor, a UW senior and the world’s No. 2-ranked amateur golfer, was presented with the 2010 Ben Hogan Award, college golf’s equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. Way to go, Huskies!
