I recently spent a weekend on the East Coast attending a couple of Husky barbecues in New York and Washington, D.C. Both events were first-class, and I want to say thank you to our gracious hosts.
Lex and Diane Gamble have opened up their beautiful home in Chappaqua, N.Y., for an impressive 37 years. It was 1973 when they first decided to host a gathering for UW alumni on the East Coast. Gas was 40 cents a gallon back then, the Vietnam War was ending, and Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon was atop the music charts. Fifty people came to that first barbecue, and now it’s a summer tradition for Huskies living in the New York area.
The UW Alumni Association honored Lex and Diane with the 2010 Distinguished Service Award for their incredible volunteer work on behalf of UW alumni. Read more about their volunteer efforts from the June issue of Columns.
Joe and Kathy Ryan hosted the 11th annual Washington, D.C. Salmon BBQ at their home in Potomac, Md. We were treated to beautiful weather and wonderful hospitality, not to mention a barbecued salmon display that would whet any appetitte. It’s a thrill to join our great hosts in sponsoring events like this. Without the UWAA volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to host more than 25 Husky Summer Celebration events across the country. Thank you!
