Special insider’s guide to tailgating in 2010

Wondering what to do for tailgating this year? You are definitely not alone.

The south parking lot at Husky Stadium is under construction and closed due to the Sound Transit Project, meaning many UW fans will have to adapt to new surroundings in 2010. But tailgating is a college football tradition, and we’ll make it work. Here are some useful tips to help your Husky tailgate parties succeed.

What’s new in 2010:

The “Montlake Lot” is now for Tyee Club members (season ticket holders) only. You may not park in this lot without a Tyee Club permit.
All public parking is on the main UW campus.
Parking rates have changed: $25 for vehicles with three or more persons; $30 for vehicles with two or fewer persons; $100 RV and vehicles with trailers.
RVs and vehicles with trailers must have an RV-specific parking permit prior to entry into any campus lot. Click here for more info.

Tailgating rules:

BBQs and open flames are not allowed in any of the parking garages or enclosed parking structures including the Triangle Parking Garage, Central Parking Garage, Padelford Garage and West Campus Garage.
You may BBQ on the roof of the Padelford Garage only. This is not an option in all parking garages, but if there is sky above you at Padelford then you are in the clear.

What the general public needs to to know:

UPDATE 9/17: The ticket office says the parking lots will open at 6 a.m. for the Nebraska game. The UW says that waiting outside any of the parking facilities before they open will not be allowed. Whatever happens, be careful in those close quarters, respect your fellow Huskies, and have fun.

Huskies @ BYU pre-game checklist

Washington opens the 2010 football season Saturday at BYU. Kickoff is 4 p.m. on the West Coast. Here is a quick list of things to know heading into the big game:

College Colors Day
Every Friday is “Purple Friday,” part of the UW’s Real Dawgs Wear Purple campaign, but this Friday, Sept. 3 is extra special. It’s College Colors Day and it’s a national event with alumni and fans donning their favorite team’s school colors. For us, that means wearing purple and gold to work, to school, to the grocery store, to everywhere in between. Tell your boss, “I just had to show the Huskies some love!”

Sark on UWTV
Don’t miss Steve Sarkisian’s weekly press conference every Monday on UWTV. Straight from Sark airs live at noon (PST) from the Don James Center at Husky Stadium. Visit UWTV.org and click “Watch the Webcast” in the upper left corner. These press conferences give you great perspective on last week’s game and this week’s opponent. Plus, Sark is the most motivating guy you know!

BYU Buttons Ready
Each week, we’ll unveil a winner of our popular button slogan contest. The BYU slogan is ”COSMO-NOT!” and it’s a reference to the BYU mascot, Cosmo the Cougar. If you’re traveling to Utah for the game on Saturday, you can score a limited edition button at the Husky gathering in Salt Lake City on Friday at Squatter’s Pub Brewery. Click here for info on this special pre-game party.

TV Coverage for the BYU Game
A reminder that Saturday’s game is on CBS College Sports. It is channel 412 on Comcast or 633 in HD. It’s a pay channel so you may have to pony up a few bucks or head to a friend’s house to watch it. The game is also available via satellite on DirecTV channel 613 (Choice Xtra Package) and Dish Network channel 152 (America’s top 200 Package). There does not appear to be any way to watch the game online.

Dubs makes his television debut

This has been online for a few weeks now but it’s so good you just have to see it. Dubs is the UW’s live mascot and he’s all grown up. Catch his stellar television debut in this commercial promoting Husky football Saturdays. I think it’s great that Dubs is out there like this. He’s one of the most popular figures on campus, after all.

Columns Extra: Jake Locker interview

In June, I interviewed Washington quarterback Jake Locker for Columns magazine. Being the cover story, I wanted to do something different as many of the stories written about Jake this summer have been similar—he passed on the NFL Draft and is back at the UW for his senior season.

I felt Columns, as the University of Washington’s alumni magazine, should do a story that in five years is still a good read. So I wrote about Jake’s charity work. His enthusiasm for working with hospitalized children is inspiring, and it was clear during our interview that he was happy to talk about the work he does off the field.

When did you first get involved in helping sick children?
Growing up in the family and the community I did in Ferndale, you looked out for other people. It was very community-based. When families needed help, you helped them. I think that was instilled in us from a very young age.

Are the children you get to know a big influence on you?
I’ve always said that I learn more from them than they learn from me. The way they look at it, the way they approach it, they’re always so strong. It’s not going to beat them, and they don’t feel sorry for themselves. To me, that’s amazing. Even if it’s a 6-year-old kid it’s like, hey, this is what I’m dealing with and I’m going to make the most of it and enjoy my life. It’s helped to shape who I am and how I live my life. If they can do it, why can’t I? What’s holding me back from really truly enjoying life every day if they’re able to do it in the situations they’re in? That’s the satisfaction I get out of it.

Has your outlook on football changed because of these experiences?
I’m as competitive a person as you can find. I love playing football and I’ll do it as long as I can. But I do understand there’s a lot more important things in life. At the end of the day, it’s just a game and that’s how you should treat it. You should have fun with it, you should enjoy it, do everything you can to win the game. But also understand that if you lose it’s not the end of the world. Life goes on. There’s other things you need to deal with and will be faced with. Those are the times when the lessons they have taught me really come back.

Chewing up our rivals with catchy button slogans

Each year at this time, a few lucky staff members from the UW Alumni Association barricade themselves in a room and secretly choose the new button slogans for the upcoming football season. It’s the best “meeting” of the year. It’s also an important one, as these are the slogans that grace our gameday buttons each season.

I’m sure you’ve seen them at the Huskies’ road games. Ore-goners. Level the Devils. Leave the Bruins in Ruins. These buttons have been a UWAA tradition since the mid-1990s and many Husky faithful have been collecting them for years at our Washington Warm Ups. This year, we’ve partnered with University Book Store to bring you gameday buttons at BOTH home and away games. You’re welcome.

While we can’t reveal the newest button slogans just yet (it’s a surprise), here is a look back at some of the very best slogans from years past. This is Husky history, smack talk-style. Enjoy!

Husky football previews are just around the corner

Are you ready for some football?

The UW announced this week that its premier season preview celebrations will take place in late August. The annual Husky Marching Band Sneak Preview is Thursday, Aug. 19 in the Don James Center, while Raise the Woof! is Aug. 27 on the east practice field at Husky Stadium. The UW kicks off the season Sept. 4 at BYU.

I went to the Husky Marching Band Sneak Preview two years ago and it was great. Good food, lots of fans, and a closed-doors talk from the head coach who came right off the field from practice. Doors open an hour before dinner and it’s definitely worth going early. How many other times can you sip a cold microbrew and watch the Dawgs practice?

Lawrie, Taylor win Player of the Year awards

It was quite the week for UW athletes, as Danielle Lawrie picked up her second straight softball player of the year award and Nick Taylor earned men’s golf player of the year honors.

Lawrie, a member of the 2008 Canadian Olympic team, became just the second player ever to win the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award in back-to-back seasons. Taylor, a UW senior and the world’s No. 2-ranked amateur golfer, was presented with the 2010 Ben Hogan Award, college golf’s equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. Way to go, Huskies!

Sark, Romar highlight new Husky sports event

For nearly 40 years, Husky coaches traveled across the state to meet with fans of all ages. This, of course, was known as Coaches Tour and it was a staple of the spring sports season. But a new generation of UW coaches has a new vision, and Tuesday, May 11 marked the beginning of an exciting new era.
