ALUW Board Meeting, December 16, 1999

Present:  Anne Zald, Christina Byrne, Rob Estes, Venta Silins, Linda Pitts
Guest:  Andy Johnson

1.  Legislative Committee Survey, Report and Discussion

Andy reported on the results of the survey.  47% of the membership either support all legislative activities or are willing to donate money to pay a lobbyist. 1.3% would not pay to retain a lobbyist but would either write letters or meet with their representatives, and 2.7% would just write letters.  49% of the membership did not return the survey.

The Legislative Committee recommendation is to retain Tom Bristow for this legislative session.  The Board agreed, noting that the vast majority ofsurvey respondents (75 out of 81) do support paying for a lobbyist.

The Board will begin dues solicitation at the end of January 2000.  This will include membership dues and a suggested donation to supportlegislative activities. The Legislative Committee will need to continue educating the membership on the importance of legislative activities and the need for monetary support.  The Board will do anything it can to help support these efforts.

For the upcoming Legislative Day, the Board and the Legislative Committee will ask the membership to write letters and arrange for meetings with their legislators.  It was agreed that people should go in pairs to these meetings if at all possible.

2. UW SLIS Project Network

Venta reported on discussions with the SLIS on ALUW involvement in the mentoring project.  As in past years, the Alumni Association will run the project; ALUW can help by giving it our support.  Venta will contact UW librarians who have been mentors in the past to see what tips they can give to members who are considering serving as mentors this year.

For more information, visit the Project Network Web site at http://www.ischool.washington.edu/alumni/projnetwork.htm.  The site
includes an online sign up form.

3. Program Committee Report

The Committee is working on the Winter quarter meeting and the popular Books and Beverages program.

Maureen Nolan has joined the Program Committee.

4. Miscellaneous Business

Rob will do the tax forms for ALUW and also the reporting for the lobbyist.

The Program Committee will need to set the date for the Spring quarter meeting fairly soon.  The election results are announced at this meeting, so the election must be timed accordingly.
