ALUW Executive Board Meeting, May 10, 2000
Present: Anne Zald, Christina Byrne, Rob Estes, Venta Silins,
Linda Pitts, with Andy Johnson from the Legislative Committee
1. Legislative Committee Report
Andy Johnson reported that a major concern for UW librarians at the close
of this year's legislative session was that there will be more competition
for fewer funds during the next session. We will really need the
services of our lobbyist during this time. Also to watch for in the
next session: may see a movement to suppress homosexual literature in libraries
if Oregon Citizen Action is again pushing the idea in that state and may
see another attempt at Harmful to Minors legislation.
The Legislative Committee will hold a brown bag lunch session on the
collective bargaining issue in the Fall.
The Board has begun discussion on how to inform the membership of lobbying
2. Spring Membership Meeting
Christina Byrne reported that the Dottie Smith will present a program on
investments clubs at the spring meeting; other speakers will be determined
later and will possible include someone from UW Benefits and TIAA/CREF.
The business meeting agenda will include reports from the treasurer,
the secretary, and the Legislative Committee. The results of the
ALUW election for new Board members will be announced.
3. Faculty Council Appointees
The Board discussed the various openings on Faculty Councils. The
results of Board deliberations on new appointees will be sent to the membership
via e-mail at a later date.
4. Program Committee Report
Christina Byrne reported that the Program Committee wants to organize a
social get together, probably during summer quarter. A pizza party
at the Waterfront Activities Center is one possibility. Chris and
Venta will discuss this with LSA to see if they want to help sponsor the
party and make it for all staff instead of just librarians.
5. Treasurer's Report
Rob Estes reported that we have received 98% of our target for the legislative
fund and dues for this year; this amount was contributed by 68 people.
Another mailing on dues and contributions to the legislative fund will
go out in a few months.
We have $4,109.61 in savings and $840.05 checking.
