ALUW Winter Quarter Meeting: Thursday, March 6, 2008

Announcements from ALUW President John Bolcer:

1) A membership letter will be sent out soon
2) Dues fees are dropping, although they are entirely voluntary
3) ALUW will stop paying for a lobbyist, as we have not collected enough information from him to warrant continuing with that. Instead, much of the information can and will be easily tracked online.
4) There will be a revision of the bylaws and those will be sent out as soon as they are completed.
5) The ALUW website is now linked in the new UW Libraries staffweb.
6) John discussed concern regarding the sending of university records outside of the University of Washington archives and relinquishing control to Cheney, WA, the proposed new location along the Washington/Idaho border.

Lisa Oberg announced that there is a bill (SB 6380) before senate containing two action items. The bill concerns support for enhancing school library programs. The bill will help ensure that Washington students have full-time access to school libraries and a certified teacher librarian to provide info tech and literacy. Action items are: a) call legislative hotline, b) post petition comments.

The first speaker was Mike Crandall from the iSchool who spoke on the impact of free access to computers and the internet at public libraries. This is a grant funded project. The second speaker was Adam Schiff, UW's principal cataloger. He talked about the future of LCSH subject headings, based on Library of Congress findings. His PowerPoint presentation is also available on the ALUW website.
