ALUW Fall Quarter Meeting: Thursday, November 20, 2008
Secretary's Report - Gail Kouame handed out minutes from the Spring Quarter meeting for review. Minutes were approved.
President’s Report – Louise distributed 13 ALUW brochures to new librarians this Fall. Also wants people to know that Faculty Senate has a blog - legrep.blogspot.com
Treasurer's Report - $1312.30 in checking. It does not reflect the cost of todays refreshments: $241.88. Current balance of our organizational savings account comes to $3,010.21. $125 will go to a speaker engagement: Clare Beck.. No incoming dues lately – appeal to have people pay dues as there are operating expenses.
INSER report – Judith Henchy – There is a CIA-funded position on campus. There is also an iSchool position that is funded by Homeland Security. Issue came to light in an article in The Stranger. Focus is on study abroad programs and course development by faculty. Also, in data mining. The Jackson School was approached and rejected the proposal for a CIA-funded project. The grant project now on campus was not widely known about. Seems to be a focus on minority students and recruiting them for the intelligence community. The Jackson School has written a letter to the Provost, as have some iSchool librarians. You can learn more about INSER f – Int’l Security Education and Research – from their web site. Louise encouraged ALUW members to email Louise or Judith with concerns and to state whether they feel ALUW should take a position on this. AAUP reps at Faculty Senate want to examine the accountability/joint governance issues around this. Judith will keep us updated about this.
Race & Gender Salary Study Committee – report from Joe Kiegel on behalf of the committee – report is linked from e-reserves - https://eres.bothell.washington.edu/eres/coursepage.aspx?cid=1242 - Requires UW NetID to access
- Bottom line: there are inequities and the committee made some recommendations for remedies
