Joe Kiegel reported on the WLA Legislative Day. No actual lobbying was done since most of the legislation of interest to libraries had died in committee or without action. Budgets from both houses have been passed and are waiting for action from conference committees.
Charles Lord announced that the ALUW Spring membership meeting will be held on May 13, 1998 and will feature Deborah Jacobs, new head of Seattle Public Library. Alex Wade reported that the Winter Quarter Luncheon was well attended. The Spring Quarter lunch will be a brown-bag featuring reports from Faculty Council representatives.
Kathleen Forsythe reported that the Elections Committee has completed its slate of candidates for the 1998-1999 ALUW Executive Board. This slate of candidates will be announced to the membership soon and further nominations will be solicited from the membership at large. Ballots will be sent out in April.
Betty Bengtson announced that the Librarian's Personnel Code has been approved, and she hopes to implement it by July 1, 1998. About two years ago, a task force made recommendations for implementation that will be followed to develop the process. Two public forums will be held during the spring to discuss the implementation process, and the timing of this year's promotion cycle will be extended to accomodate the changed schedule. The criteria for promotion have not been changed, just the structure will be different. People in transition will be accomodated and a special information meeting will be held to keep them informed. Betty thanked the committee and both Charles Chamberlin and Charles Lord for their leadership in accomplishing this extensive project.
Diane adjourned the business meeting and introduced Charles Lord to introduce the program.
