B. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION OF ALUW APPOINTEES TO FACULTY COUNCILS AND COMMITTEES

1. All ALUW appointees must meet the criteria as established in:

Volume Two, Part II of the University Handbook Section A. 42-32. Appointment of Faculty Councils

A. Because the Faculty Councils will be concerned with broad problems of policy relating to matters of University government, the basic qualifications of appointees should include a broad familiarity with the problems of University government, an understanding of the particular problems of the faculty within the framework of the University, and a familiarity with the substance of the particular areas of Council responsibility.
In addition, ALUW appointees must:
  • Hold a provisional/non-continuing or permanent/continuing appointment with the UW Libraries;
  • Be familiar with the purpose and governance of ALUW;
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills with faculty;
  • Be committed to attend regularly all council and committee meetings;
2. Term of Appointment

The term of appointment is for one year. The appointment may be renewed by mutual consent of the appointed librarian and the ALUW Executive Board for up to 3 consecutive years. Thereafter, the Executive Board will inform the membership of the vacancy and ask for applicants. Previous appointees are eligible to apply.

3. Representation and Responsibilities

A. Representation

The appointee represents the Association of Librarians of the University of Washington at all council and committee meetings.

To the extent possible, the appointee has the responsibility to inform and consult with the ALUW membership on issues of importance.

B. Reporting

All appointees are required to:

  • Prepare a quarterly status report for the ALUW home page.
  • Give a brief report at the Winter or Spring ALUW quarterly meetings.
All appointees are encouraged to:
  • E-mail or send information directly to the ALUW membership when needed (e-mail address - librarians@lib and lawlibrarians@lib);
  • Convene members in an appropriate forum when desired.
4. Rules of Procedure for Nomination

Every April, the ALUW Executive Board will contact each appointee to the Faculty Council or Committee to discuss the status of his/her appointment for the upcoming academic year in accordance with the specifications established in "Term of Appointment."

For each committee or council vacancy, the ALUW Executive Board will inform the membership and ask for applicants.

5. Rules for Application

To apply for ALUW appointment to faculty councils and committees, librarians must submit a brief statement (letter or e-mail) describing how they meet the criteria as identified in Section One of "Criteria for Selection of all ALUW Appointees of Faculty Councils and Committees."

6. Appointment

The ALUW Executive Board will select the appointments from the submitted applications based on "Criteria for Selection of all ALUW Appointees for Faculty Councils and Committees." At the end of May, the Board will forward those nominations to the Senate Executive Committee where each nomination, if approved, will be sent to the next Senate meeting (usually in October) for final approval.
