ALUW Legislative Committee

The Legislative Committee monitors issues and coordinates active participation by the members on topics such as intellectual freedom, competitive salaries, and electronic networking. The Legislative Committee coordinates active member participation in the WLA-sponsored Legislative Day in Olympia each year, where members have the opportunity to meet their legislators to discuss current bills and issues.

The ALUW Legislative Committee has been active since the late 1980s. Regular activities that the committee has conducted every year:

  • Held regular committee meetings and monitored legislation
  • Established annual legislative priorities in consultation with the membership
  • Attended WLA Library Legislative Day in Olympia (5-7 people on average)
  • Had a representative on the WLA Legislative Planning Committee (usually 2 in-person meetings and phone calls)
  • Hired and worked with a lobbyist

Additional activities that past committees have conducted:

  • Met with individual legislators outside of Library Legislative Day
  • Held meetings for ALUW members, either presentations by the lobbyist or by legislative committee members
  • Notified the membership about issues
  • Held write-your-legislator sessions
  • Compiled ILL statistics by legislative district and sent personalized letters to legislators
  • Testified before legislative committees
  • Coordinated lobbying efforts with the UW professional staff association
