International Research and Training in Health Informatics: A program of the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine

Training Opportunities

Introduction

Amauta Health Informatics Research and Training Program will strengthen the research capacity at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) through short-term focused training in informatics and long-term training for key individuals who can enhance the core informatics capabilities at UPCH. The University of Washington (UW) has, over the past decade, had an ever-increasing portfolio of collaborative biomedical and behavioral research projects with UPCH and its formally affiliated institutions. This project continues and expands the UW-UPCHcollaboration.

Goals:

  • To train core professionals for representative regions in health informatics.
  • To link health informatics professionals in a nationwide collaborative network in Peru.
  • To strengthen the library and information resource capabilities and accessibility at UPCH.

How we achieve our goals—A multidisciplinary approach:

  • Short Courses in Lima, Peru:
    • Introduction to Informatics: Genomics, resource access and core informatics courses will be taught to between 30 and 50 Peruvian health professionals.
    • Training of Trainers: Selected UPCH faculty will be trained to teach the Introduction to Informatics course by observing and assisting in the initial introductory course. They will be provided all course materials, course guides and selected consultation to assure their success in offering future Introduction ot Informatics courses in Peru.
  • Long-term Training in Seattle
    • Key UPCH faculty will be trained as researchers and teachers of informatics through certificate, Ph.D., postdoctoral, and post-masters opportunities
    • The certificate program will be housed in the University of Washington Bio-medical Health Informatics Program. It requires six academic quarters for a total of 18 credits, 12 from core areas in informatics. This flexible program is most appropriate for prospective UPCH faculty who are interested in focusing on a particular research or clinical area and who have advanced degrees in computer science or other related disciplines.
    • Alternatively, trainees may select masters or doctoral training in Bio-medical health informatics.
    • If necessary, long-term trainees will be brought to Seattle for intensive English study prior to beginning their academic program.

Target Audience:

  • Early and mid career researchers
  • Researchers and teachers interested in advanced study of informatics
  • Resource persons within the libraries and other information based services
  • Various training opportunities

New focus areas of training

  • Genomics:
  • Laboratory researchers at UPCH will be trained to analyze genome sequences and in other ways take advantage of the benefits of genomics. The initial emphasis will be on developing research capabilities in HIV, syphilis, tuberculosis and malaria. After successfully completing the Introduction to Informatics short course in Lima, Peru, researchers will be brought to Seattle for a six-month training program in computational genomics and laboratory work.
  • Library Resource Development:
  • Collaboration between the faculty and librarians at the UW Health Sciences Library and UPCH will aid in the development of databases and interfaces at UPCH.
