Background

This meeting was a follow-up to the November 2004 Composite Maintenance workshop that was held in Seattle to review curriculum development in Composite Maintenance Training. The curriculum currently being developed will provide an introduction to the maintenance and repair of composite materials used in aircraft products. With widespread involvement by industry experts in the course development, the goal is to establish standard course content for organizations and educators introducing students to this topic. The workshop is an important event for reviewing progress in course development.

The SAE Commercial Aircraft Composite Repair Committee (CACRC) has made progress in standards for composite maintenance training since the 1990s. With expanding applications of composite materials to a variety of aircraft products, the FAA wants to help the CACRC accelerate their efforts. The FAA Joint Advanced Materials & Structures (JAMS) Center of Excellence has initiated developments to this end. In order to provide the necessary basis for standards, experts from the field of composite aircraft maintenance are periodically reviewing progress. The 2005 workshop reviewed the initial course, which will provide a practical introductory basis on composite maintenance for engineers, inspectors and technicians.

Objectives

Primary objective

Review technical details that need to be included as a basis for maintenance & repair training, with a focus on critical safety issues

Secondary objectives

  1. Discuss industry engineering practices, which are needed in training modules to authenticate safety messages
  2. Identify additional training development needs
  3. Provide directions for future research and development

Primary Deliverables

  • Terminal Course Objectives (TCO) + Course Description Abstract
  • Modules
  • Safety Messages
  • Testimonials (volunteers support)
  • Storyboard of a typical course outline
  • FAA guidelines (precursor to policy) on training needs:
