Seattle Public Schools Biliteracy Workshop

June 1, 2019

Seattle Public Schools Dual Language Instructors and University of Washington faculty convened in June to attend a collaborative workshop on the topic of Approaches for Teaching Biliteracy. This event was organized by the International Schools Leadership Team (ISLT) Bilingual Committee, and International Education Administrator, Michele Anciaux Aoki. Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin, and English language educators from Seattle Public Schools Dual Language Immersion programs presented examples of biliteracy learning in the K-12 classroom. A panel from the University of Washington’s Alliance for Multilingual Teaching, Research, and Learning including Dr. Renee Shank (Education), Dr. Chan Lü (Asian Languages and Literature) and Dr. Amy Pace (Speech and Hearing Science) discussed current research projects focusing on language acquisition, dual language immersion, teacher training, and professional development. Topics of interest included challenges and successes with implementing biliteracy, opportunities for collaboration with higher education, and building the evidence-base for best practices in multilingual learning contexts.
