Getting to work and getting away from work -- everyone has their own best way, either by car, bike, bus or ferry. Seattle's recent growth has led to congestion, but also to ambitious designs to reduce traffic. Choose the route best for your and come explore!
The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Washington serves several regional hospitals, all within the Seattle city limits. Many staff and faculty choose to live in the city, to limit their commuting time. They arrive at work by bike, foot, car or bus. Some adventurous souls living on Lake Union or Portage Bay might even consider kayaking to work.
Lake Washington is a major barrier to commuters. Those to the east of the lake frequently take the Interstate 90 or State Route 520 bridges to reach Seattle. Those to the northwest and southwest of the lake choose Interstate 5. Some staff choose to live across the Puget Sound. Those residing in Bremerton, Bainbridge Island, Vashon Island to the west, or Whidbey Island to the north rely on commuter ferries and connecting van pools to get to the University and the hospitals.
If you car pool, you can get discounts for parking at the University of Washington. Shuttles and express buses also exist to help you avoid driving during rush hour: just park your car at the Park and Ride lots and hop on an express Metro or Sound Transit bus. UW employees and students get significant discounts for monthly bus passes via the UPASS program
Not all staff for the department actually work at the University. Since the department provides anesthesia for several regional hospitals, faculty, residents and staff are scattered among several facilities in Seattle. This is true for other departments of the University. To facilitate travel with some of these hospitals, there is a frequent shuttle that runs between Children's, Harborview and the UW hospitals.
