Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at the University of Washington:
Our departmental faculty and staff provide anesthesiology and perioperative care at a number of UW Medicine owned and operated locations such as Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington Medical Center and Northwest Hospital & Medical Center all conveniently located around downtown Seattle. In addition, our faculty and staff delivers anesthesiology and perioperative care at Seattle Children’s and the Puget Sound Veteran’s Administration Hospital. Members of the Division of Pain Medicine provide both inpatient and outpatient services at the above-mentioned locations and at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
As UW Medicine grows, we continue to retain and recruit nationally and internationally recognized clinicians, clinician-scientist, clinician-educators and basic scientists. Our entire faculty and staff contributes to excellence in patient care, education and research to meet the current and future health care needs of our patients, UW Medicine and our partners throughout the WWAMI region and the world.
Our residency-training program in Anesthesiology aims to educate resident physicians to form and lead the anesthesia teams of the future; these anesthesia teams are expected to provide safe, efficient and patient-centered perioperative care. In addition, the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine offers a wide variety of clinical and research-oriented fellowship-training opportunities. These include fellowships in all the subspecialty areas certified by the ACGME. Furthermore, our Department created a variety of innovative faculty-fellowship positions that aim to transform residents and fellows to perioperative experts.
Thanks to our extraordinary scientific faculty, the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine ranks nationally in the top three of all academic departments for federal research funding (UW & Seattle Children’s combined). Basic, translational and clinical research is being conducted across numerous hospital sites including, but not limited to, the UW Medicine Health Sciences building on the main UW campus, Ninth & Jefferson Building (NJB), across the street from Harborview Medical Center, Seattle Children’s; Puget Sound Veteran’s Administration Hospital, the Mitochondria and Metabolism Center (MMC) at South Lake Union Campus and the downtown Seattle Children’s Research Institute. Departmental faculty in these centers work in close collaboration with one another and their colleagues at partner institutions across the city and the WWAMI region. Students, residents, fellows and junior faculty are encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity to participate in discoveries that help improve anesthesiology practice, perioperative and critical care medicine, as well as pain management for patients from early stages of life to adulthood.
I encourage you to take a moment to explore our departmental website and to consider the many exciting research opportunities and educational programs that we offer. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any of our distinguished faculty to learn more about our Department and what it stands for.
Again, welcome to our Department!
