Faculty Career Pathways
Faculty
represent three career pathways: Clinician Clinician, Clinician Educator and Clinician
Scientist. Clinical faculty belong to the medical group practice "University of
Washington Physicians" (UWP), representing 800 physicians in 18 major specialties
and approximately 40 subspecialties.
The Basics
Note:
these are not the full guidelines for faculty appointments, but are merely highlighted
excerpts.
The Department of Anesthesiology offers three pathways for
faculty: Clinician Clinician, Clinician Educator and Clinician Scientist.
Entry into any of these three pathways will normally be at the Acting Assistant
Professor Level. Faculty positions at the Acting level are annual appointments,
subject to annual renewal for a maximum of four years.
The total number
of Clinician Clinician faculty whose primary assignment is in core facilities
(defined as the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC), UWMC/Roosevelt,
Harborview Medical Center, Children's Medical Center and Veterans' Affairs Medical
Center) is limited by School of Medicine policy to 25% of the total number of
regular departmental faculty.
Promotion within any pathway will be
based on evidence of continued professional development in the focus area(s) of
that pathway. Promotion is generally warranted on the basis of regional
or national recognition for achievement in clinical care, teaching, administration
and research.
Clinician Clinician Pathway
This
pathway has a predominant emphasis upon the provision of clinical care and clinical
teaching in the clinical environment, without the requirement of documenting scholarly
activity by authoring scholarly works.
Time
- 90% time commitment
to clinical practice by Assistant Professors at one of the University's major
affiliated teaching sites
- 10% baseline nonclinical time; nonclinical
time in excess of 10% will be awarded at the discretion of the Chair, Hospital
Chief and Executive Committee.
- 23 working days vacation per year
- 5
working days per year of time to attend meetings as a non-presentor (subject to
approval by the Hospital Chief of Clinical Anesthesia Services)
Promotion
- Clinical care abilities are at the 70th percentile for all faculty in the
Department
- Competence in clinical teaching is essential to promotion
- Clinical teaching abilities are at the 50th percentile for all faculty in
the Department
- Teaching abilities and performance in circumstances other
than clinical care should be considered, but should not be regarded as essential
- Administrative
leadership is desirable, but not essential
- Administrative involvement
should predominantly be in the clinical arena.
- Administrative leadership
in clinical teaching is helpful but not essential
- Administrative leadership
in clinical care is desirable but not essential
- Some evidence
of scholarly contribution is desirable
- Participation in and contribution
to clinical research is expected if opportunities present.
Clinician
Educator Pathway
This pathway has a predominant
emphasis upon the provision of clinical teaching and administration in the clinical
environment.
Time
- 80% time commitment to clinical practice
at one of the University's major affiliated teaching sites
- 10-20%
more nonclinical time may be granted for ongoing research projects, with the actual
amount of time at the discretion of the Chair and Executive Committee with consultation
from the Research Committee if necessary
- Up to 10% more nonclinical time
may be allowed for major departmental commitments
- 5% more nonclinical
time may be allowed for major extra-departmental commitments (national, medical
school, community)
- 40% ceiling for nonclinical times
- Nonclinical
times in excess of 40% will be awarded at the discretion of the Chair, Hospital
Chief of Clinical Anesthesia Service, and Executive Committee. Generally,
nonclinical time in excess of 40% requires some source of outside funding.
