The research mission of the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine of the University of Washington is to advance medical science and improve clinical care by conducting state-of-the art pre-clinical, clinical, translational, and outcomes research.
The Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine will be recognized as a leader in innovative research programs. Innovation in research will enhance training of residents and fellows, attract top-tier faculty, and increase cross-disciplinary collaborations, all of which will contribute to transforming medical practice.
The Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine recognizes research as the cornerstone of our academic program. The goals of departmental research programs include advancing knowledge in health and disease, and improving the quality of patient care in perioperative and pain medicine. Such goals will be achieved by successful competition for research funding and by cross-disciplinary research programs including faculty, fellows, residents, and students.
Welcome to the research pages of the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine web site. Faculty in our Department engage in multidisciplinary basic, translational, and clinical research, with major emphasis in neuroscience and pain, genomics and mitochondria biology, outcomes, and medical training and patient education. Our research facilities are located in the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, South Lake Union Campus, Seattle Children's Hospital and Research Institute, and the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System. Our basic science laboratories occupy state-of-the art facilities. The patient volumes and the breadth of conditions clinicians encounter at our hospitals provide ample opportunity to conduct high quality clinical and translational research with the goal of improving public health. Our Institute for Simulation & Interprofessional Studies provides unique research opportunities in health care education, patient safety, and outcomes. Faculty in all academic tracks, residents and fellows actively participate in our research programs. Our faculty and the research they conduct are recognized nationally and internationally. Research expenditures across all sites for the current fiscal year amount to $10,636,000 total costs. These research funds are obtained from the National Institutes of Health, non-profit organizations and foundations, and industry. This year, NIH research funding awarded to faculty in our department amounts to more than $8,110,000. We invite you to explore these pages to learn more about the research activities and programs we have to offer.
