The University of Washington (UW) Center for Pain Relief offers a 12-month fellowship in pain management for physicians who wish to specialize in the management of pain at the postgraduate level. Fellows will have three weeks of vacation time and one week of educational conference time during this 12-month training.
There are five fellowship positions available for academic year 2010-2011 for individuals who have completed residencies accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) by the beginning of the academic year. Three of these positions will be occupied by anesthesiology residency graduates; two positions are available for graduates of clinical specialties such as physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, psychiatry, internal medicine and family medicine. Training is provided for non-anesthesiologists in critical emergency airway and resuscitation management skills required of interventional pain practitioners.
The Pain Fellowship involves required clinical activities at the UW Medicine affiliate hospitals such as the University of Washington Medical Center, the University of Washington Medical Center – Roosevelt, the Seattle Veterans’ Administration Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center. Advanced clinical training is designed to provide an educational experience covering all aspects of management of patients with pain, and provide an opportunity to develop research, and teaching activities for those who are interested. The program is accredited by ACGME, the American Board of Anesthesiology, and qualifies its graduates to sit for the Examination of Special Competence in Pain Management.
The UW Center for Pain Relief is operated by the UW Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, and consists of an aggregate with representatives from the Schools of Medicine and School of Dentistry, as well as physicians and psychologists from the Departments of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Rehabilitation Medicine, Neurology, Neurological Surgery, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and consultants from many other clinical services in the UW Medical Center. Extensive interactions with health care providers of all types occur in the Center for Pain Relief.
Residents who wish to apply for the UW Pain Fellowship may use the link on the left side of this page to access the online application. The application deadline for the academic year 2010-2011 is June 30, 2009.
