University of Washington Pain Fellowship Program

Description

PLEASE NOTE: An opening has arisen in the Fellowship starting July 2008. This opening is only for an anesthesiology resident. Please submit an application to Linda Frantz, if you are interested in applying for this opening.

The University of Washington (UW) Division of Pain Medicine offers a 12 month Fellowship in Pain Medicine for physicians who wish to specialize in the management of pain at a postgraduate level. Fellows will have 3 weeks of vacation time and 1 week of educational conference time during this 12 month training. There are 4 fellowship positions available for academic year 2009-2010. Three of these positions are occupied by an anesthesiology residency graduate; one position is available for a graduate from another clinical specialty such as Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neurology, Psychiatry, Internal Medicine or Family Medicine. For non-anesthesiologists, the Fellowship is of 15 months duration and incorporates three (3) months in the operating room, training and administering general anesthesia under the direct supervision of attending anesthesiologists. The purpose of the anesthesiology rotation (occurring during the initial months of the fellowship at Harborview Medical Center) is to familiarize non-anesthesiology fellows with critical emergency airway and resuscitation management skills required of interventional pain practitioners.

The UW Pain Center offers one position for an extra 12 months of fellowship as a chief fellow in Pain Medicine. This position will be available for a fellow who wants to further enhance skills in pain management, has an interest in academics and research and has successfully completed the first 12 months of the fellowship training program at the UW Pain Center. This position will be available starting the 2009-2010 academic year.

The Pain Fellowship involves clinical activities at UW Medical Center affiliated hospitals, including the University of Washington Medical Center, University of Washington Medical Center - Roosevelt, VA Puget Sound Health Care System and Harborview Medical Center. Advanced clinical training is designed to provide an educational experience which covers all aspects of pain management and to provide an opportunity for individuals interested in developing research and teaching activities in this area. This program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American Board of Anesthesiology and qualifies its graduates to sit for the Examination of Special Competence in Pain Management.

The University of Washington Division of Pain Medicine is operated by the UW Department of Anesthesiology and consists of an aggregate, with representatives from the School of Medicine and the School of Dentistry, as well as physicians and psychologists from the Departments of Anesthesiology, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Rehabilitation Medicine, Neurology, Neurological Surgery, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, as well as consultants from all other clinical services in the University of Washington Medical Center. Extensive interactions with health care providers of all types occur in the Pain Center.

Residents, who wish to apply to the University of Washington Pain Fellowship Program, may use the following link to download an application and submit it, along with a curriculum vitae, five (5) letters of recommendation (one letter from the department chair, one letter from the residency program director and three letters from faculty members with whom the resident has worked closely are all required), a narrative statement about yourself that should include an explanation of your choice of a pain management fellowship, your advanced clinical training year goals, your long-term career goals, your interests outside of medicine and anything else you would like to communicate within two typewritten pages, medical school transcript and diploma, and USMLE 1, 2 and 3 scores.
