Anesthesiology Research Fellowship, University of Washington

The Anesthesiology Research Fellowship at the University of Washington is designed to develop academic anesthesiologists who are outstanding in the design, conduct and interpretation of laboratory and/or clinical research.

Description

The fellowship is directed towards individuals interested in an academic career in anesthesiology. The program stresses experiential training, with appropriate didactic coursework in relevant areas, such as statistics, clinical trials design, and basic science courses tailored to the fellow's needs. Research training may be carried out under the guidance of faculty in the Department of Anesthesiology, or under other faculty in relevant basic science and clinical disciplines at the University. The goal of the fellowship experience is to develop well-trained investigators who will be inquisitive, thoughtful, productive, competitive for extramural funding, and capable of independence and leadership in the specialty.

The program is a comprehensive, two-year post-residency fellowship. The fellowship may be performed in concert with the Clinical Scientist Track as defined by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Fellows will select a mentor in a specific area appropriate to their interests and long-term career goals. Participation in other UW fellowship activities (i.e. Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program) is also possible. Fellows will spend approximately 20% effort in patient care activities to help maintain their clinical skills. During the second year, clinical efforts will include a normal share of departmental attending night call (approximately 2-3 nights per month). Reappointment for year 2 will depend upon successful progress and accomplishment in year 1 (i.e. progress in course work and research, as defined by the mentor), concurrence from the appropriate hospital division chief that the fellow is performing well in their clinical duties, and the approval of the Director for Research. In some instances, previous fellowship or research training may allow a research fellow to proceed immediately to the 2nd year of the research fellowship when coming to the University of Washington.

The Fellowship stipend for the first year is set at the R5 level. The Fellowship stipend for the second year is twice the R5 level. Benefits and support for travel to scientific meetings are also provided. The fellow will be expected to work with the mentor to apply for external funding ) for at least the second year of the fellowship (e.g.. NIH Individual NRSA or Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research grants) to gain experience with grant writing. Progression to the second year of the fellowship is NOT contingent upon extramural funding. However, if successful in obtaining extramural salary funding, commensurate salary increases may be negotiated with the Director for Research/ Chair.

Current areas of Departmental research interest include:

  • Basic and clinical pharmacology of anesthetics and other drugs
  • Cardiovascular/respiratory physiology
  • Cerebral function and CNS
  • Neuroanesthesia
  • Pain
  • Health Outcomes

Anesthesiology Research fellows may also work in University of Washington laboratories outside the Anesthesiology Department.

Final decisions regarding research/training area and mentor will be made in concert between the applicant and the Department.

Inquiries and formal applications should be directed to the Director for Research. Please provide a complete curriculum vitae, description of training and any prior research experience, a statement of interests and career goals, and mention of any prior correspondence with UW faculty regarding possible research opportunities.
