The application process
Applying for
residency
In the coming interview season (all on Mondays, except for January 19, 2010, starting October 26, 2009 – January 25, 2010) we are accepting applications for the following training positions:
- “Categorical Program” (16 positions). This is the full 4 year anesthesiology residency training consisting of the UW-linked internship year and 3 years of clinical anesthesia (CA) training. These positions begin in June 2010 and are filled via NRMP.
- Clinical (Advanced) Anesthesia (CA1 - 8 positions). These positions start on July 1, 2011: Applicants will need to complete a clinical base/internship year (R1) prior to starting the CA1 year. Normally applicants apply for the clinical base year such as a transitional or preliminary program for June 2010 at the same time as applying for the CA position. A portion of the positions will be filled through the NRMP "matching" process, and the remaining positions will be filled outside the “match”.
- A small number of CA1 positions are available to start on July 1st 2010, for applicants who have successfully completed the clinical base year. The requirements of the clinical base year are as follows—At least 6 months of rotations caring for inpatients in internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, or any of the surgical specialties, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, family medicine, or any combination of these. There must be one month and no more than two months of critical care and emergency medicine and up to one month may be taken in anesthesiology.
- Five year combined program in anesthesiology and critical care medicine training, beginning with the PGY1 year and followed by 4 years of training in clinical anesthesiology and advanced training in critical care medicine (2 positions). These positions are filled via NRMP.
- Trainees currently in PGY1-CA2 years of training who are interested in the combined program are encouraged to apply, as CA1-CA3 positions will be offered in this program outside the “Match”.
- Bonica Scholars Program. This is a program designed for applicants who wish to pursue a research career following anesthesiology residency. The Bonica Scholars will receive a $10 000 award during their CA1-3 years of residency training. A limited number of positions are available though the NRMP. A full description of this program is available via the program description page. A separate application is also required; this 2 page form may be downloaded here and submitted by email.
