Department Vision, Mission & Goals, 2012-2014

Overall Vision

We are committed to nurturing and shaping the future leaders of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine by promoting critical ethical thinking, challenging the boundaries of knowledge, fostering compassion and developing creativity and independence of the mind through interdisciplinary partnerships.

Mission Statement

The UW Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine is committed to excellence in patient care, education and research, meeting the health care needs of UW Medicine and our patients and partners throughout the WWAMI region and the world.

Goals 2012-2014

1. Outstanding Clinical Care

Deliver high quality, compassionate, timely, effective, ethical, safe, accountable, and coordinated perioperative and pain care, for all patients through the patient-centered surgical and medical home by:

  • Developing pragmatic and uniform patient, provider and system metrics
  • Promoting a culture of measurement- and value-based care
  • Embracing transformative modalities in clinical care (advanced imaging, psychophysical testing, Telehealth and mobile web-based patient reported outcomes)
  • Create an affirmative and enabling clinical environment, emphasizing mutual respect across the workplace so that departmental members feel proud & privileged to work in the UW system

2. Enhanced Education Opportunities

Incorporate innovative approaches in education, training, and mentoring by:

  • Creating a formal, structured mentoring process
  • Establishing a quality and safety education program in Anesthesiology
  • Creating a plan for sustainable ISIS teaching
  • Continuing to develop inter-professional education programs within our NIH Center of Excellence for Pain Education
  • Continue to develop bilateral overseas education programs that foster collaborative relationships to further improve sustainable perioperative Global Health initiatives.
  • Creating a one year ICU/acute care residency with UW MEDEX

3. Cutting Edge Research

Build a national and international recognized innovative research enterprise that encompasses basic, translational (bench to bedside), clinical and outcomes research in areas relevant to perioperative, acute care and pain medicine

  • Establish and develop translational collaborations between clinical researchers and basic scientists within and outside the department
  • Improve quality of care and clinical outcomes research across the department, the Center for Pain Research on Impact, Measurement and Effectiveness (CPRIME) and the UW Centers for Comparative and Health System Effectiveness (CHASE) alliance within UW Medicine

4. Robust Administration

Work towards visibly integrating IT in all of the department's education, research, and clinical activities by:

  • Provide administrative staff infrastructure to facilitate the success of the faculty in all professional domains (clinical, education, and research)
  • Better define how administrative staff can provide the best possible support for our faculty and trainees and vice versa
