C. Michelle Kleisath (BA UC Davis 2003)

Research Interests: White Privilege, Critical Race Theory; Alter/Native Methodologies, queer theory and critical discourse analysis; Feminist Development studies; China studies; Sino-Tibetan relations; Tibet in the western imagination

"My current project explores how critical race theory and white privilege theory can transform approaches to expert knowledge production in the academy and beyond. My dissertation work explores how the tools shaped by critical race theorists can be used to critique and understand China Studies and development practice. Focusing on the burgeoning development industry in Eastern Tibet/Western China, it investigates how race influences the structure and practices of transnational NGOs, and how various stakeholders in these organizations understand their own racial positionality, revealing new pathways by which the transformation of development practice is possible."
