ADVISER APPRECIATIONS
Julie Brunett
Global Health
My colleague Julie Brunett is, in my estimation, the best possible graduate advisor ever. She has worked in our program (Global/International Health MPH) for over five years, and I cannot think of a single thing she could do better.
Ours is a complicated degree program comprising students from across the globe and within which are countless possibilities for completing the various ever-changing sets of requirements. Some of our students are mature, seasoned professionals in their home countries, but many have never been away from home. All of them--American and international alike--have diverse needs before, during and after they are here on campus, including not only academic advising, but cultural, social, logistical and emotional advising and counseling as well.
Julie is ever thoughtful and compassionate and highly culturally knowledgeable and appropriate. Somehow she is able to devise creative ways to address any and all issues that arise. Her communications with students are unfailingly professional and respectful, yet warm and caring at the same time. Moreover, she brings equal consideration, creativity and generosity of spirit to us, her co-workers, each day.
I feel incredibly fortunate and honored to work alongside her and count my blessings daily for that fact.

Heather Hucks
Interdisicplinary Arts and Sciences (Tacoma)
Heather works tirelessly in our department as an adviser to make sure
that students are served--often working above and beyond her scheduled
hours and on weekends to make sure that students have their questions
answered and crisis situations mitigated. Heather is dedicated to our
student body, and literally does whatever she can to make sure that
our students are well-served.
She is a true student advocate, and helps students to navigate their
degrees in IAS, and to resolve issues that come up. She helps students
understand how UWT and IAS work, and also works with students to
facilitate their graduate school and law school plans. Beyond
students, Heather works with faculty to provide the student
need/student perspective, and help create comprehensive scheduling,
degree pathways, and scheduling. And she is always willing to help
cover for fellow staff. She has also served on a number of campus-wide
committees to help improve our services at UWT!
Heather pumps happy students out of her office all day long, helping
to create a happy student body, and a pleasant campus experience for
all of us.

Matt Munday
Drama
Matt joined the School of Drama as the Undergraduate Advisor in August of 2008, a 50% position. At that time we had a PhD TA assigned to assist the advisor for 3 quarters.
Matt knew very little about our field or our school, but had experience and training in counseling. Since that time Matt has learned our University, School and field, formed excellent working relationships with ALL our students and faculty and, despite losing the TA assistant to budget cuts, gets more done in a week than any other combination of people I have worked with in 16 years as Chair. Matt has cleaned up and streamlined the files, the website, and made his office a friendlier place. He has expanded his portfolio to include ANYTHING which impacts our undergraduate students including actively matching students with internships. Independently he decided to review the back files, found students who had not completed their degrees, sought them out and helped them finish, or make a plan to finish. This is but one example of the sort of initiative he takes every day, while never going off on tangents or neglecting to check in. I almost am at a loss for words to describe how well this man does his job. Among a staff of excellent people Matt really shines as someone who gives 150% every day.

Andrea Crosby
Biology
Andrea Crosby is an incredibly thoughtful and energetic advisor. She is a young adviser and has been in this position for a about three years but she has made sure that she knows what her students need and how to find all the resources for them. When I hear from students that have met with Andrea they are so excited for what they will be able to do next because they were encouraged by her. She works with students to think 'outside of the box' and bring in disciplines across campus in their curriculum. Her students have a very tough course plan they have to follow with biology courses but I have many of her students come to me because they were inspired to study abroad or to take a course outside of their particular academic path they thought they had to follow and they want to diversify what they are learning here at the UW. I feel inspired in my job when I see the kind of support that Andrea gives her colleagues. She is always building her fellow advisers up and encouraging them and what impresses me so much is that she remembers everyone's names. It's hard sometimes in the social sciences to know what's going on in the natural sciences but when I have a question, Andrea is always quick to explain the answers and make the information approachable to not only the students but her colleagues as well. Andrea's kind approach to advising is something that I very much admire and respect.

Mary Tillotson
Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity
May 19, 2010-05-19
Mary Tillotson, an Academic Adviser/Counselor in the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity is my recommendation for Adviser of the Year. She works diligently assisting students in developing a meaningful educational plan; one that acknowledges and incorporates students' personal abilities, values and goals. Communication is an "art: that Mary has mastered with both the students she serves, and the colleagues that work with her. To Mary, the joy of serving students is both rewarding, invigorating and fuels her passion to serve. Her connections with students are exemplary, extending postive regard and support, frequently advocating on their behalf . Many of her former students stay in touch with Mary long after graduation, providing updates of their on-going accomplishments. She gets excited everytime a student shares their stories.
As a great collaborative team member, Mary's work ethic is high on her priority list. She stays on board until the job is accomplished, offering insight and suggestions that produces high-quality work. Her precision for details is an asset that allow her to often catch what others might miss. Mary's warm and friendly nature creates an atmosphere of respect and extends postive regard towards everyone. She's not one to call attention to herself, but her quiet dynamics in small-group or one-on-one interactions are special exemplary moments.
Mary's rigorous schedule can be daunting, especially as she weaves a myriad of tasks that requires balancing time served on University committees, implementing and attending student workshops, representing OMAD on Transfer Thursdays, serving potential community college students, while taking care of self. These are all done in the spirit of excellence. With over 25 years of experience working at the University of Washington, Mary has been and still is a wonderful role model and a sterling team player. It is my honor to recognize Mary Tillotson, as a candidate for the Adviser of the Year Award from the Office of Minority Affairs.

Susan Inman
Admissions then Environmental Health
While Susan Inman recently became the adviser last year for Environmental Health, I believe she deserves the Adviser of the Year Award for her many years of service as a transfer adviser and outreach coordinator for UW Admissions. Susan tirelessly visited dozens of community colleges every year (hundreds of visits over the course of her tenure in Admissions) educating thousands of prospective students about transferring to the UW. She also was the main presenter at Transfer Thursday every week for years, again educating thousands of hopeful prospective transfer students. I had the pleasure, along with many of my Gateway Center colleagues, to see Susan in action at college fairs and at Transfer Thursdays. Most people would have gone INSANE being asked the same questions over and over again by all these students. Not Susan. She was friendly, welcoming, sometimes humorous and professional every time. Even when a doozy of a question was asked, she was unflappable and the epitome of professionalism. I greatly admire her spirit and dedication to serving both incoming and current students at the UW. It can be a thankless job but you did it with much grace and humor. Thank you, Susan, for all that you've done on behalf of our excellent transfer student population.

Evening Degree Advising
Emily has worked with the program for 8 years, providing leadership in recruitment and enrollment expertise specifically. She has remained committed and very hard working through the fire, the transition to a fee based model and many other organization shifts. She is passionately committed to education and students. Many, many students credit her support as instrumental is their success at completing a degree. She is a 'can do' person who has also committed her energies to Evening Degree but also to campus advising through her involvement with APAC for the past two years.

Dan Feetham
College of Engineering-Student Academic Services
In the year and a half that Dan has been an adviser on campus, he has made a huge impact. He has served on the APAC board, revised the engineering orientation sessions and streamlined the student referral process between the College of Engineering and the Gateway Center.
As the Gateway Center liasion to the College of Engineering, I have had the pleasure to work with Dan on a regular basis. He frequently checks in with me to discuss particular student situations and make sure he and I are giving students a consistent message regarding their academic options. He truly cares that students find a major that best suits them whether that is within the College of Engineering or not.
Finally, students love Dan. His energy and enthusiasm along with his caring attitude make students feel comfortable sharing their concerns with him. Seeing his positive influence on incoming freshman, last year's orientation leaders went so far as to make him a Dan The Man t-shirt for his birthday. As a result of all his dedication and hard work in serving students, I believe Dan The Man should be Adviser of the Year.

English Department
If you face a challenge during your academic or professional career, go see Kimberly. Within minutes she will show you: yes, you can double-major, study abroad and still graduate in 4 years; yes, it is okay to change your mind about your profession and find your true passion. Working her advising magic, your problem will soon become a fabulous and rewarding journey. Even beyond graduation, Kimberly goes the extra mile to help her students, and even her colleagues, academically and professionally succeed - whether by writing a detailed letter of recommendation, by searching for and sending along notices of jobs, or by helping brainstorm ideas or just being a willing and supportive listener. As her advising efforts extend well beyond the formative years of an adviser, her long-term dedication and passion for her students, colleagues, and community deserve to be recognized!

English Department
Mel wastes no time taking action to implement positive changes in the English Department curriculum and processes, throughout the UW campus, as well as in the community beyond. Mel regularly has an open-door policy, along with an analytical perspective regarding ways the English Department can continue to evolve with the changing times. In addition, Mel has created a seminar, presented at last year's Career Week, to help all interested students and working professionals identify ways to improve their personal statements for Graduate School and beyond. The seminar came with take-home examples of the "Do's and Dont's" of PS writing. Mel's creative developments and drive deserve to be recognized!

Mel Wensel
English
As a faculty member and program director, I rely on Mel's creativity and wisdom, her deep institutional and disciplinary knowledge, her complex awareness of students' needs on our campus and nationally, and her always pragmatic, collaborative and extremely efficient work ethic. When our faculty makes crucial decisions, such as redesigning our major, I am always relieved to see that Mel is part of the conversation. She is often the first person I seek out for reliable advice and counsel, whether I'm designing a new course, getting information to our majors or advisers across campus, expanding outreach to the larger community, or seeking information about particular students. In just the past year I've approached Melfor advice regarding students' interests and needs related to period courses, independent study projects, and graduation requirements; I've sought her help in working with transfers, English language learners, Evening Degree Program students seeking space in day courses, and English majors hoping to become teachers; I've worked closely with Mel in developing curriculum and community partnerships as part of a new learning community for English Majors who are considering becoming teacher. Mel is always well-informed, always both clear-eyed and compassionate in finding ways to meet student and faculty needs, and always able to provide--with great good humor--suggestions for how to resolve a conflict or work through an institutional question.
Mel's exemplary skill at providing information and guidance in a supportive way is clear in the English Majors list she moderates. In one small example, the "Dawn Patrol" messages, posted each quarter just before graduate students line up in the wee hours for registration, are masterpieces of efficient communication couched in brilliantly funny prose, a skill Melissa often uses to deliver potentially stressful information about deadlines and requirements. As the teacher of students from all over campus through my work in the Interdisciplinary Writing Program and the Community Literacy Program, and also as the parent of a recent University of Washington graduate, I am well aware that Mel's professional, holistic approach to advising is quite unusual on our campus. In addition to being a model of voicing the effect of departmental decisions on students and staff in discussions with faculty, Melissa is exemplary in supporting students' academic and graduation planning as undergraduates, and in providing information on a wide range of activities and organizations of interest to our majors as well as internship, career and other post-graduation opportunities. In this huge institution, where students too often feel they are unimportant and it is much too difficult to find the information and resources necessary to succeed, Melissa is an extraordinarily valuable advisor and collaborator who combines a calm, always well-informed voice of support with an extraordinary understanding of, and ability to communicate clearly about, the needs of students, faculty and staff.

Aley Mills-Willis
University Honors Program
Aley has long been an outstanding resource for Honors students and our campus partners. She brings to her job unsurpassed enthusiasm, genuine interest in her students' and colleagues' successes, unquestionable knowledge and a great sense of humor and kindness. This year, Aley embarked on a new adventure (motherhood), but remained committed to Honors and to the UW. Throughout her transition to working AND enjoying her new, adorable son, Aley continued to be a steadfast, dependable and amazing asset to Honors and the UW. Even on maternity leave, Aley found time to communicate with students, connect with staff, and continue to help us implement a new curriculum and prepare for admissions season. There is no doubt that Honors would not be Honors, nor would the UW be the UW, without advisers and colleagues like Aley -- she is truly an inspiration to me, as a new adviser, and always one of the highlights of my day. Thank you for your consideration of Aley for Adviser of the Year!

Gateway
Amy Fox has been a wonderful addition to Gateway advising. She hit the ground running by actively participating in a number of committees and advising groups across campus. She has contributed to the curriculum development of summer orientation for the ENVIRO/BIO Links presentation, she teaches a Freshman Seminar on Exploring Environmentally-Related Majors, and as a committee member of the Mary Gates East Space Planning, she offers a critical and inclusive approach to the Gateway and OMA&D move conversations. Apart from all of her involvement in cross campus collaborations, Amy exemplifies characteristics of an excellent advisor. Amy helps students think critically about their academic choices and goals. She encourages regular contact with her advisees and she helps students recognize their own responsibilities as a scholar at the university. Students walk into the Gateway Center with many different issues. Amy is able to adjust to each student's circumstance by asking her colleagues within the Gateway Center and across campus for assistance, thereby creating a team of advisers to help the student. With her background in study abroad, Amy uses her global perspectives and good cross- cultural communication in her advising. Thank you for all of your contributions and collaborations with the advising community, Amy!
