Arabic Program Policies
During Period 1 of autumn quarter registration, registration is only open to students majoring in:
Near Eastern Languages and Civilization – NEAR E
International Studies – SIS
International Studies (Comparative Islamic) – SISCI
International Studies (Comparative Religion) – RELIG
Near and Middle East Studies – N&MES
International Studies: Middle East – SISME
Linguistics – LING
During Periods 2 and 3 for autumn quarter registration, registration is restricted to add codes.
To be eligible for an add code, students must complete the Autumn 2009 Arabic Waiting List Catalyst Survey. Completion of the survey puts students on a waiting list for an add code; it does not guarantee a spot in any Arabic class.
To advance to the next level/year (ARAB 421, 431), students must earn at least a 2.0 in the third quarter of the preceding series (ARAB 413, 423).
Students completing first or second year Arabic may not necessarily be permitted to enroll in the following year if they are not majoring in a priority major (NELC, SIS, etc).
Students who take Arabic courses anywhere other than at UW must take the Arabic Placement Test (a) to receive credit for study completed elsewhere (b) to move to the next level of Arabic.
(Please click here to view the policies for the Arabic placement and proficiency exams.)
Students who have had a gap of one year since taking Arabic must take the Arabic Placement Test to re-enter Arabic mid-sequence (courses past ARAB 411). This applies to majors and non-majors alike.
Passing the Arabic Placement Test does not guarantee a student a spot in a class. There must be space available and priority is given to students continuing from the previous level and to students in the priority majors noted above.
ARAB 411-423 courses are limited to 25 students. Arabic 431-433 classes are limited to 15 students. Over-capacity enrollment is not allowed.
Auditors, non-matriculated students, ACCESS students, or non-degree students are not permitted to enroll in Arabic classes. There is rarely, if ever, space available and priority is given to majors, matriculated, and degree-seeking students.
