INTEGRATED STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES | DESIGN AND COMPUTATION | GRAPHICS AND DESIGN | HANDS-ON DESIGN AND MAKING INTEGRATED STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES Applications are invited for a part-time (50%) to full-time (100%), nine-month, tenure track to tenured faculty position to be appointed at the rank of assistant, associate or full professor, appropriate to the successful applicant’s experience. The position includes instructional duties in the Department of Architecture’s B.A. and M.Arch. programs and potentially in the M.S. in Architecture and the College’s Ph.D. in the Built Environment. The successful candidate will teach introductory classes in structural design and analysis for buildings, is expected to develop new courses in his/her primary area of interest, and assist in the integration of structural technologies into the culture of design studio. Applicants must have advanced knowledge in some aspect of structural engineering and be able to supervise advanced graduate research studies, and have the potential to develop innovative funded research or professional practice. Applicants must hold a minimum of a professional degree in architecture or engineering, and show promise of excellence in teaching, research and/or practice. Applications are invited in the area of Computation and Design. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the exploration of digital design within the B.A. and M.Arch. studio programs, as well as to establish and pursue a research focus in an area of design computing (cognition, fabrication, representation, interaction, etc). S/he will be expected to lead studios exploring architecture and computing, teach lecture and seminar courses in design computing topics, and work with students in the professional (M.Arch.), post professional (M.S.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) programs. As a member of the Design Machine (research) Group, the successful applicant will be expected to collaborate in the conduct of research contributing to the expansion of the field. Candidates must have at least a professional (M.Arch) degree in architectural design and significant professional or academic experience in computing. Of particular interest are candidates who demonstrate design excellence and who will work with current faculty in both design and computing. Salary will be commensurate with experience. The selected candidate will be expected to assume a leadership role in the design graphics portion of the architecture curriculum. In addition to teaching graphics courses, s/he will teach associated introductory architectural design studios, often as a member of a team. Additionally, s/he may offer advanced studios at the B.A. or M.Arch. level and/or courses in an area of specialization within the architecture curriculum. Candidates must have at least a professional (M.Arch) or equivalent professional degree. They must also demonstrate potential for exceptional achievement in a specific area of creative practice and/or research in the area of design graphics and representation. Favorable consideration will be given to candidates with a record of effective teaching and demonstrated graphic ability. A record of creative achievement in architectural practice or research is desirable. Salary will be commensurate with experience. HANDS-ON DESIGN AND MAKING Applications are invited from individuals whose teaching and creative work address the areas of architectural design, materials and making, and hands-on shop-based instruction. The successful applicant will contribute to the exploration of materials and making, craft and similar topics, including teaching shop-based courses within the B.A. and M.Arch. programs. (“Making,” in this context, refers to the actual fabrication/manufacture of projects such as furniture, casework, building sub-assemblies, or even whole buildings.) S/he will be expected to be able to teach in design studio as well as in hands-on courses including properties of materials and/or furniture design and fabrication studios, and/or similar courses and studios. The successful applicant will also be expected to pursue creative work in critical practice, studio furniture design/fabrication, research/writing or related areas of scholarship, research, or practice. Candidates must have a Masters level degree as well as a degree from a school of architecture, plus academic experience in hands-on shop-based instruction.
