OVERVIEW

Introduction to Architecture is a first course in architecture for people contemplating architecture as a field of study or as a career. In this program people of various backgrounds and ages, undergraduate students contemplating a major in architecture, and people with degrees in other fields considering graduate study in architecture can learn more about the field and the experience of design education. Introduction to architecture is an intensive 9-week summer program held on the University of Washington campus.

COURSE CONTENT

Introduction to Architecture is a design studio based program. Students work on a series of increasingly complex design projects culminating in the design of a complete building. The studio experience is augmented by workshops, lectures, readings, field trips, and design reviews with guest critics. The projects and related work introduce participants to design methods, history, theory and practice of architecture. Participants also receive some instruction in architectural drawing and model-building.

CLASS SCHEDULE

Introduction to Architecture meets during the University of Washington summer quarter, from mid June through mid August. The course is 8 credit hours with official meeting times on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10:50 to 11:50 am and 1:10 to 5:45 pm. Occasionally, the class meets on an evening or a fourth weekday for a field trip to a building site or an architectural office. Morning sessions are devoted to lectures and demonstrations, drawing instruction, and field trips. Students work in design studio during the afternoon sessions, meeting with faculty individually and in small groups. Attendance and participation in all class meetings and satisfactory completion of all projects are required to receive credit. As in other architecture design studio courses, each student is allocated studio work space accessible 24 hours a day. Some of the projects require substantial out of class time, and most students find it useful to work in the studio to benefit from interaction with others in the class. (Please note that students should avoid scheduling additional classes between the morning and afternoon sessions.)
