Association of Japanese Literary Studies

The University of Washington will host the thirteenth annual meeting of the Association of Japanese Literary Studies from Friday, 22 October, through Sunday, 24 October 2004.

The conference, titled, "Landscapes Imagined and Remembered," will explore the depiction of landscape in Japanese literature from earliest times to the present. In addition to twenty-four speakers from North America, Europe, and Asia, the conference will feature keynote addresses by:

Professor Matsuoka Shinpei (University of Tokyo)
"Chûsei Nihon no fûkei o kangaeru: Zeami no nô o kiten ni shite"

Professor Nakahodo Masanori (University of the Ryukyus)
"Okinawa bungaku ni miru fûkei no hen'yô"

Professor John Treat (Yale University)
"Colonial Seoul in Japanese and Korean Fiction: Scenes from a Forgotten Landscape"
