Proficiency & Placement Exams

If you have already been placed in a language class and need an add code or wish to check on the status of a wait list, go to the Add Codes and Wait Lists page.

Proficiency or Placement?

Proficiency Exams measure your ability in a language, and are used to satisfy or waive language requirements. Proficiency Exams are not used to determine what level language course you should be taking. No credits are given for taking these exams. Proficiency exams test what students are expected to know after one year of university-level language instruction. [The department does not offer proficiency exams to those outside the University (e.g., high-school students seeking admission, extension students, etc.).]

Placement Exams and interviews determine which language class is appropriate for your background and ability. Placement tests cannot be used to waive language requirements. No credits are given for taking these exams.

After you have determined which type of exam you need, find your language below and follow the instructions.

Chinese

Please read carefully and thoroughly!

Proficiency

One way to waive the one-year UW foreign language requirement is to pass the Department's Mandarin Proficiency Exam, scheduled quarterly during the regular academic year, except Summer quarter. (For information on proficiency testing in non-Mandarin dialects of Chinese, please contact the Gateway Undergraduate Advising Center, at 543-2550.) A $20 fee is to be paid on the day the Exam is taken. Please send an email to asianadv@u.washington.edu with your name and e-mail address to sign-up for the Exam.

The next Chinese Proficiency Exam will be on

9/19 2:00-4:00

Second- and third-year proficiency exams are also offered for CISB students and Jackson School students, generally held at the same time as the Mandarin Proficiency Exam described above. For details or to sign up for an exam, send an email to the advisor.

The University of Washington is committed to providing access, equal opportunity and reasonable accommodation in its services, programs, activities, education and employment for individuals with disabilities. If you are a student with a documented disability and need to request disability accommodation(s) for your exam, please contact the Disability Resources for Students Office at least ten days in advance of your scheduled exam date at: 206.543.8924/V, 206.543.8925/TTY, 206.616.8379 (FAX), or e-mail at uwdss@u.washington.edu.

Placement

If you would like to take a modern Chinese language course and are not currently enrolled in any UW Chinese language class, you must first complete the online Chinese Language Evaluation Questionnaire, generally available around the first day of the first week of registration each quarter. You are highly encouraged to submit your questionnaire as early as possible during the registration period, since the questionnaire can be closed without notice. [Note that students who wish to take Classical Chinese do not need to fill out the questionnaire.]

We regret that non-matriculated students will not be considered for modern Chinese language classes at the first- through third-year level, with the exception of Summer courses.

Once you have submitted your questionnaire, you will receive email indicating your status and including further directions. Notification is normally within five working days.

Note that if you find it closed, please check back again later.

Note: If you get a "catalyst tools error" message when clicking on the link below, this simply means the questionnaire is currently closed.

Announcement: Chinese Language Evaluation Questionnaire will be open May 9-23, 2008 for Autumn 2008 registration.

Chinese Language Evaluation Questionnaire

Hindi

Proficiency

Exam is administered at the Office of Educational Assessment, 440 Schmitz Hall [map], (206) 543-1170.

Placement:

If you would like to take first-year Hindi and are not currently enrolled in any UW Hindi language class, you must first complete the online Hindi Language Placement Questionnaire, available the first day of the first week of registration each quarter. You are highly encouraged to submit your questionnaire as early as possible during the registration period, since the questionnaire can be closed without notice.

The first-year Hindi sequence is divided into two sections, one (311B) for students with no background whatsoever in Hindi, and the other (311A) for students with some (but not extensive) background. Both sections will meet daily from 9:30 to 10:20. Students are grouped into the two sections after completing the questionnaire about their backgrounds in Hindi.

Enrollment Restrictions: Because it is quite possible that students enrolled in Hindi 311 may already have some exposure to or proficiency in Hindi, it is important that the University of Washington policy concerning taking language courses at the first and second-year level be understood. This policy reads as follows:

First-year (elementary) or second-year (intermediate) foreign-language credit is not granted either by examination or by course completion in a student’s native language. “Native language” is defined as the language, or one of the languages, spoken in the student’s home during the first six years of his or her life and in which he or she received instruction through the seventh grade.

Students who misrepresent the extent of their background so as to gain entrance to a course at the elementary of intermediate level may be dropped from the rolls of that course. Students who have questions as to whether they are prohibited from taking Hindi 311 according to this policy should speak with one of the instructors so as to obtain a suitable placement in a Hindi course at the appropriate level.

Once you have submitted your questionnaire, you will receive email indicating your status and including further directions. Notification is normally within five working days; however, submissions for Fall quarter classes received after the Spring quarter's eighth week of instruction will be responded to within one month.

Note that the questionnaire may be closed during certain periods over the summer. If you find it closed, please check back again later.

Note: If you get a "catalyst tools error" message when clicking on the link below, this simply means the questionnaire is currently closed.

Indonesian

Proficiency & Placement: Please see the Indonesian instructor.

Japanese

Proficiency

Exam is administered at the Office of Educational Assessment, 440 Schmitz Hall [map], (206) 543-1170. There is a single test for proficiency and placement (please refer to the Japanese Placement Test when contacting the Testing Center/Educational Assessment Office.). If a student passes 113, the Registration Office will be notified.

Placement

Placement tests are required for students who have taken Japanese in high school, but not in college, or who know some Japanese but have never taken college courses. The Japanese Placement Test is available at the Office of Educational Assessment. This test places students in Japan 111, 112, and 113. There are no kanji on the placement test. For students who place out of first-year Japanese and desire placement in a higher level, placement interviews are required. To apply for an interview, please submit a Japanese Placement Interview Application form to the Asian L&L office, or give it directly to a Japanese program faculty member who teaches second, third, or fourth-year Japanese.

Students with previous college background may continue their study of Japanese by enrolling in the next-higher course here at UW. Add codes for this purpose are available from the course instructor.

If a student feels that his or her placement is inappropriate or has concerns about a particular placement, he or she should meet with the Japanese Program Coordinator. If a student is already taking a course and discovers that his or her placement is not appropriate, he or she should talk to the instructor of the course as soon as possible (within the first two weeks of the course) for assistance.

Exam is administered at the Office of Educational Assessment, 440 Schmitz Hall [map], (206) 543-1170.

Exam is administered at the Office of Educational Assessment, 440 Schmitz Hall [map], (206) 543-1170. First and second year level exams are given. The exam is an hour and a half in length, in multiple-choice format, with approximately twenty minutes of "listening," and also tests spelling, grammar, and vocabulary. Korean in mixed script is not included. The results of the test will be emailed both to the student and the department or, in the case of a proficiency exam, directly to the Registrar's Office. Entry codes will be available by the end of the quarter in which the exam is taken, and will be emailed to students who request them (send your request to koreanlg@u.washington.edu) Students requesting entry codes should include in their email request their name, student number, and the date they took the placement exam.
