Centennial Celebration
This academic year is a special one for the Department of Asian Languages and Literature. It marks the 100th anniversary of the founding at the University of Washington of the first department devoted to the teaching of Asian languages, literatures, and cultures. Known as the Department of Oriental History, Literature, and Institutions, that department is the direct ancestor of AL&L, as well as of several other departments on the UW campus.
The Department will be holding special events throughout
the year to commemmorate this centennial milestone. Check back here for

The College of Arts and Sciences
and the UW Alumni Association are sponsoring a Centennial Lecture Series
featuring presentations by faculty from four UW departments. The Asian L&L
presentation, by Professors Zev Handel and Michael Shapiro, will take place
on the evening of November 19th.
"The Centennial Lecture Series: Beyond
the American Point of View" is a set of four presentations and
panel discussions featuring the UW's renowned faculty.
