Special new announcement: Japanese TA applications are now being accepted. Applications due Friday, May 18, 2012. Click here for further details.

Chinese - Japanese - Korean - Hindi

The application form and department statement of ASE policies may be downloaded below.

All graduate students applying to, accepted by, or currently enrolled in the University of Washington are eligible to apply for teaching assistant positions. Strong preference is given to graduate students in the Department of Asian Languages and Literature. The deadline for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Hindi is January 17, 2012. Late applications may be considered at the discretion of the Department. Students will be notified of their appointments as soon as practicable. All appointments are subject to availability of funding. Department hiring will be carried out in conformity with the UW/UAW contract for Academic Student Employees.

By the time of appointment, students who are non-native speakers of English must demonstrate sufficient ability in English by satisfying the requirements detailed in Graduate School Memorandum No. 15. We strongly suggest that all applicants who do not fulfill the requirements in Graduate School Memorandum No. 15 take the VERSANT test and the University of Washington's ENGL 105 course for TAs as soon as possible.

For additional requirements and information, please download and read the application form.

Japanese Oral Proficiency Interview

Any applicant for a Japanese TA position who is not a native speaker of Japanese (according to the University of Washington’s definition of native speaker, as defined here) must take the proctored ACTFL OPI test for non-native speakers of Japanese. To take the ACTFL OPI in Japanese (the oral test only; the WPT is not required), the applicant should go here and click on "general teachers/students." Applicants may apply online for the test or download forms.

The applicant may take either (1) the Official ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) or (2) the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview by Computer (OPIc). Information on fees, how to prepare for the test, etc., is available at the languagetesting.com site. Students must have the test officially proctored. This can be done at the UW Office of Educational Assessment. Information on arranging proctoring is available here.

Because scheduling and scoring take some time, the committee will consider applications without the OPI score while we await your results. Final decision on these applications will be made once the OPI score arrives. If your application requires an OPI, please attach a note to the front of your application stating the status of the scheduling of your test.

OPI testees should arrange for their OPI score to be sent directly to the department, to Abby Petty's attention.

Note: All applicants must keep the office informed of their current phone number, mailing address, and e-mail address.
