Location
Sichuan University is in Chengdu, an ancient, fascinating
city located between the heartland of Chinese civilization
and the Tibetan plateau. From the relics of the mysterious
prehistoric Sanxing
dui culture
to the plethora of ancient Daoist and Buddhist temples
dotting its hillsides, Chengdu and Sichuan have a long,
rich history. It is a place of scenic wonder, including
the stunningly beautiful Jiuzhai
gou National
Park. Sichuan is also famous for its spicy, vibrant cuisine
and its ethnic minorities.

Program
Students will receive approximately 160 hours of classroom language
instruction, earning UW credit equivalent to a full year
of Chinese language coursework at the second-, third-,
or fourth-year level. UW students will be in classes together
with students from Arizona State University. Outside of class,
students will meet with individual language tutors for
language practice and for integration into Chengdu life,
and adhere to a Chinese-only language pledge. There
will be opportunities for structured extra-curricular activities,
and the program will include weekend excursions to local
sites that will expose students to Sichuan’s cultural and
natural heritage. Students are also free to explore China
on their own after the program ends.
All students are required to stay in university
dormitories for
the length of the program.
Students may also consider applying to the UW
Worldwide program to
continue study at Sichuan University in the fall. The
program requires a separate applications. For details,
please visit the web site.

Students who will have completed the equivalent of one to three
years of college-level Chinese by June 2012 are welcome
to apply. Priority

language courses. In addition, priority will be given to
students currently studying at the 3rd- and 2nd-year levels,
and to students who are majoring or minoring in Chinese. Please

form for additional requirements

Students will pay an exchange fee equivalent to one term

students will not pay tuition or instructional fees to
Sichuan University.) The cost of summer tuition is available
at the university's "tuition
and fees" web page; click the link for "(SUMMER

will also pay a fee of approximately $1000 to cover
the cost of housing and cultural activities. (The
fee is subject to change, and students should also be aware
that changes in exchange rate could affect their costs.)
We are endeavoring to keep costs as low as possible and
may be able to negotiate a fee lower than $1000; the final
amount will be announced after know how many students are
likely to attend the program.
The exchange fee and the Sichuan University fee do not cover:
UW study abroad fee, airfare, visa application fee,
medical insurance, personal and travel expenses, meals. A
budget sheet with estimates for all these costs is available
for download at the top of this page.
Participating students who have committed to the program and completed
their contract (due March 31, 2012) will authorize the
following payments:
within first two weeks of April: $350
non-refundable deposit plus $275 UW study abroad fee (total
$625)
July 11: Exchange
fee (equivalent to UW tuition, less $350 deposit)
All payments made to UW will be charged to students’ accounts
in the usual way.
Announcement about insurance: The University is
implementing a new rule. All UW students traveling on study
abroad programs are now required to sign up for the mandatory
UW Study Abroad Insurance program through the chosen provider,
HTH, or to apply for a waiver if they can demonstrate that
they have equivalent personal insurance coverage for study
abroad. We will have more information about this as the
new rule is formalized. In the past the insurance cost
was about $34/month, but costs may change this year.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
Most forms of financial aid can be used to cover costs
during participation in the exchange. Participants who
are on financial aid should contact the Office
of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) to find out how their awards
will apply. Students interested in applying for increased
financial aid during the study abroad quarter should obtain a
revision request from the financial aid office. To obtain a revision
students must submit the request to OSFA along with the estimated budget
sheet that we will provide. Check with OSFA for deadlines and
