- Title: GIS MEGAPROJECT - Building the Washington State Parcel Database
- Presented by: Luke Rogers - UW, College of Forest Resources Research Scientist and co-chair of the Washington State Parcels Working Group
- Abstract: In October 2006 a group of federal, state, tribal and local government participants came together to explore whether there was interest in and a willingness to pursue the development and coordination of a statewide parcel framework data set that would be accessible to various participating agencies. At the conclusion of that meeting the Washington State Parcels Working Group was formed and has been meeting monthly ever since. This project is designed to construct a single, regularly updated, statewide parcel dataset based on data provided by city, county, state, and federal agencies that develop and maintain parcel data within Washington State. The purpose is to reduce the cost, inefficiencies, and redundant efforts of state and federal agencies, as each independently and periodically contacts parcel data originators for current data sets. The first version of the Washington State Parcel Database was distributed to Parcels Working Group members in September and soon the project team will begin collecting data for the 2008 database. This talk will focus on the political, personal, technical and legal aspects of gathering, transforming and publishing parcel data and explore some possibilities for the future of parcel data in Washington State.

- Title: Informing the Legislature with GIS - Retaining Working Forestlands
- Presented by: Luke Rogers - UW, College of Forest Resources Research Scientist and Research Lead on Strategic Forest Retention
- Abstract: In a budget proviso to the College of Forest Resources the Washington State Legislature requested a recommendations for retaining the highest valued working forest lands at risk of conversion to non-forest uses and should include an examination of means to enhance biodiversity through strategic retention of certain lands, as well as economic incentives for landowners to retain lands as working forests and provide ecosystem services. This talk will highlight the GIS components of our research including use of the Washington State Parcel Database, the unique challenges of working on legislatively requested projects and some of the results of our analysis that were presented to the Northwest Environmental Forum in late October.
