Hardware (Fox, Doug)
H10 servers are here. Will deploy as web servers, publishing servers, web file servers on Dante and Homer. Suggested names for the servers are listed below. These are names that would likely be used for backroom support and not necessarily known to the end users.
Pub/Dev cluster "Ovid" (Homer) "Virgil" (Dante)
Web server cluster "Veron" (Homer) (faculty, staff, courses, departments)
"Boca" (Dante) (students)
It may be that we will also want to separate the Samba file servers out as a separate cluster.
Desktop/Remote/Menu Access (Fox, Nathan)
Users will access $HOME directory and identify the publishing cluster by using a DNS name similar to the "deskmail" system. Suggested DNS names include:
"<user>.deskweb.washington.edu" "<user>.deskfile.washington.edu"
The DNS name using "deskfile" would be a catchall name that would get a user to their HOME directory on either Dante or Homer. The web directories would be linked off the home directory similar to the current Weber configuration and would be accessable via SMB or FTP. The DNS name would be used for general access to home directories. Looking for suggestions/comments on these names. Once we've made a decission on the name the DNS support will be added.
Will also add DNS entries for:
students.washington.edu faculty.washington.edu staff.washington.edu courses.washington.edu departments.washington.edu
Add PSH "other menu" option to:
Create default web page and directory Else connect to pub server shell.
Authentication
Will use unified pw space for general authentication support.
For the nearer term, .htaccess will be supported to allow end users to control access for smaller groups. Will explore whether we can use .htaccess to reference the unified pw space for members of the UW community along with local entries for non-UW folks. For example this would UW faculty to control access to collaboration pages for both UW and non-UW participants.
